Ok, so my neighbor is replacing the Throttle Body on his son's '98 Beetle. He ordered what he thought was the correct one for the car but obviously got the wrong part. Can somebody enlighten me as to what the new throttle body goes to? The engine in the Beetle is the 2.0L. The throttle bodies look very similar but there are obvious differences. The new one has a different shaped electrical connector and also the tubes are different.
The other thing that he told me is that when he removed the hoses off the one side of the throttle body, coolant came out. Is that correct?

OH, I did tell him that he needs to return it, but I want him to have the knowledge of what that new throttle body was off of, so he can tell that to whoever he ordered the part from.
coolant passes through the throttlebody on lots of cars. keeps them from icing over maybe? i cant i.d. the one he bought, but i can bump this thread to the top of the pile!
Why would you need to change a throttle body??
Coolant is ok.
I didn't ask him why, but by the looks of the electrical connector, is that the TPS? Maybe it went bad?
Double check. Some cars nowadays have updated throttle bodies that eliminate the coolant passage for whatever reason.
I had a friend with a 99 2.0l a4 jetta. The throttle body failed because the tps is built in. He had a heck of a time getting the correct one due to the change over from A3/A4 chassis. Your neighbor may be having similar issues.
Should not be a problem for the New Beetle since all of them were A4s.
But you raise a good point - '98 was the transition year for A3/A4. An A3 2.0 is an ABA engine, an A4 2.0 is not.
Ran into this a couple days ago - was asked where to find the engine code on a Jetta. I looked and shrugged, since the timing cover sticker was gone. "Well, what are the options?" "ABA or (something I forgot)." I look at the car, which is an A4, then look over to the computer - ABA was listed under "'98 Early Body Style" and the other code was listed as "'98 Late Body Style".
I wonder if it is in fact a late ABA throttle body (it does look kinda like it) and someone looked up the part wrong. I saw some dumbass look up the wrong parts THREE TIMES for an early TDI Jetta. Every damn time they put 9.4 solid disks on the thing, even though the 10.1 vented calipers make the pads hang way off the edge. I assume because they were asked "Is it an 8v?" Yup...

A 2.0 8v Beetle should be an AEG.
is VW one of those companies that makes stupid changes in parts like this based on whether the car is a manual or automatic?
or maybe a mid year change?
go on the NAPA or Rockauto sites and look it up- then look up the year before and the year after until you find the application that looks like the one you need.
"Mid year change".... HAHAHA
VWAG doesn't do mid year changes. Or model year changes. They just sort of throw new and old designs in one big hopper and your car gets whatever pops out for it on the assembly line.

This. Every few months it's a different part.
Both throttle bodies should have a part # on it somewhere, usually the TPS assembly.
