My cousin called this morning with some questions about his 2006 Passat 2.0T, which he bought new.

His Check Engine light came on. He didn't know the code number, but they told him that the Turbo Cutoff Valve was sticking open and needed to be replaced. I don't speak VW, but is this just a Blow Off Valve? Is this a DIY job?

He also mentioned to the service writer that his A/C had been working intermittently through the Summer, though it is working now. They said that they could see metal through the sight glass and he probably needs a new compressor. I'm not sure that you can make that kind of diagnosis through a sight glass, or even discern whether or not you can see metal bits through one.

They told him that to fix both problems would run around $2300. He only has 53k miles on it and when he asked about warranty coverage, they said that the warranty only covers him to 50k.

This is the third Passat that he has bought new and he has always been good about returning to the dealership for service. Does VW show goodwill towards longtime owners who have problems that occur just out of warranty?

Once again, I'd love to be able to edit thread titles.

its probably the Diverter Valve. Something you could definitely DIY. Get a Forge Diverter Valve, totally worth it

What he said.

I'm also sure the dealership would take care of the A/C if he raised enough hell over it, especially if this is his 3rd new passat.

Have him call the regional dealer manager through WVoA, explain this is his third VW, and there won't be a fourth if this isn't taken care of under warranty.

It's an automatic with a baby seat in the back. He doesn't need the Forge valve.

The Forge isn't just a performance upgrade. It also lasts longer, and likely is hardly more expensive than the factory (i assume it's a plastic bosch unit) replacement.

yep, it uses a piston instead of the rubber diaphragm that splits real easily...

UPDATE:

He called the customer service hotline and explained the situation. He focused on the A/C issue.

They investigated his purchase and service history and, after a couple of days, they called him back and said that they would cover 100% of parts and labor for the A/C, which was about 80% of the whole bill. He will pay for the diverter valve and installation, and he is happy.

Thank you, VW, for good customer service.
