Chunky metal flake is the new orange is the new black. If your paint doesn't look like a bass boat, you ain't E36 M3.

FTFY.

You may, in fact have.

I half jokingly told the wife a few days ago that I was going to paint the RX3 House of Kolor Aquarius (KPF104SF) with enough bass boat flake thrown in to make Zsa Zsa Gabor jealous.

Half jokingly....

Oddly enough, I don't mind rusty vinyl wraps (like I assume that VW has). But I berking hate the angle-grinder-paint-remover-and-airbrush approach to "distressing" the actual metal.

why does it matter if it is real or fake?

to me - the question is simpler: does it look cool or not?

Well... that is part of it.

Patina tells a story (e.g. worn paint under windows from hanging an arm out because of lack of AC). Fake patina is just a made up story, which can be good, but true ones are generally far more intriguing.

1) Fake boobs suck, no matter how allegedly good they look. So do fake rust and fake fade and fake wrinkles.

2) By definition, if you are artificially mimicking the hard-won, long-lived integrity of a survivor car, it doesn't look cool.

I'll throw in my 2 cents. "Patina" has been a pet peeve of mine since it started getting promoted on TV car shows as actually adding value to a car. I blame Wayne, mostly:

You used to find crusty old cars and spend tons of money restoring them to beautiful condition. You hoped to sell them for at least what you spent on the restoration. Lightbulb goes off when the economy crashes... Convince buyers that the old crusty car is worth more unrestored. Now you don't have to spend money to make money. You fob off old junk as new.

Try doing that with a house or anything else. Condition matters.

Flat black is a pet peeve of mine, along with restoration TV that consists of throwing modern parts at a car, and then slashing suspension parts until it's on the ground, begging to be put out of it's misery.

Amen brother! I'm old enough to probably be most people here's grandfather. Messed around with cars and sailboats all my life and can't ever remember a time when rust was cool rather it was real, faux or clear coated. Can't tell you how many times I have been at car shows when some young guy was telling a group or someone that his rusted piece of crap is exactly like they built hot rods back in the day! Cars had rust back then that was called rust and not patina but were usually works in process that were driven daily as the concept of project cars was pretty much unheard of. Some of the paint jobs were not great and often done by the car owner but at least there wasn't rust holes that the owners were proud of. Can't think of one person I knew back then that was happy to have rust.

Ok, where does this fall on the spectrum? Good patina, or rust that requires surgery?

Well I still like patina, flat paint and rat rods.

(I also like to think I have high stylistic standards in general.)

So there is plenty that is WRONG to my eye, and overdone, or underdone, etc.

Also, styles change. What I like today will probably turn into a meh tomorrow.

Taking the fenders off your S-10 and priming over the rust holes isn't a rat rod, for example....lots of cringe worthy stuff out there.

There is a running 1990s era vehicle that will join the family next week. The goal for it is to finish the modifications already started and then repair the body, and spray in A custom blend of tractor paints that will come out to a light green color and the roof will be beige. It SHOULD be reminiscent of an early 1960s vehicle.

On the side there will be hand painted signs depicting its new home.

If anyone could ever figure out what would "show" best at the challenge they would have a serious advantage. Some of my worst looking cars, IMHO, have finished the best. My best looking car finished mid pack.

In reply to Andy Neuman:

I really don't agree.

The rules spend a LOT of time describing what the judges are looking for, and I believe every top finishing Concours car in the last 5 years or so has met the criteria very well:

Challenge rules said: Innovation: 0-10 points Execution: 0-10 points Presentation: 0-5 points “Innovation” covers things like design, engineering, creativity and modifications. “Execution” covers things like cleanliness, workmanship and attention to detail. “Presentation” covers things like originality, theme, showmanship, team spirit, moxie, chutzpah, backstory and anything else that falls under the heading of “je ne sais quoi.”

3 Categories, and 15 descriptive words.

If you try to sum it all up in 1 word like "patina", or "shiny", or "clean", or "cool" you will NOT earn many points in the Concours.

If you address all 3 categories and 15 descriptive words, you will.

Your best looking car looked awesome, but it missed at least 10 of those 15 descriptive words.

My best Concours effort was similar- I nailed it for Presentation and Execution, but missed on Innovation.

But the BEST efforts nailed it on ALL points.

It's really not as hard as it seems. Just gotta read the rules and follow them.
