Just like the title says, I'm looking at the SMT8 as it says it has inputs for BOTH MAP and MAF as well as all the other sensors which I need but the 2 air flow measurements at the same time was 'the' major hurdle for MegaSquirting/piggybacking my OEM harness on my Cadillac N*. Any expereineces I would LOVE TO HEAR! I have an email/call into them but they're located in S.Africa, though they have a US distributor...

Well I just spoke with Bob Ida of Perfect Power USA : http://www.perfectpowerusa.citymax.com/page/page/1995627.htm, who knew these guys were so prolific, and who knew their piggybacks were so cheap! $475 for their new SMT8 which has digital and analog inputs, 2 maps, boost control, extra injector control, I'm still finding out all the goodys, but it looks like this 'universal' piggyback has way more features than traditional style made for imports. I'm excited because piggybacking the OBD-II Cadillac PCM was deemed 'extremely difficult' due to the protections, but these guys have an SMT6 (less capable) on a 2003 N*/trans/stock A/C, etc etc and they're willing to even put together a wiring diagram if needs be, for that price I'm fairly impressed but we'll have to see how it works out, will keep anyone interested involved...

Have you looked into the Apexi Super AFC 2?

Its a super capable unit, well documented, and literally 1/5 that price used.

I had a Perfect Power SMTsomething I got several years ago and it was an absolute disaster. It couldn't handle power surges and when wired as the instructions said, wiped out something in the chip's memory, supposedly due to power surge when cranking the engine over. They suggested adding a capacitor to customers doing future installs, but wouldn't exchange damaged units (even though they were properly installed and acknowledged to have issues). It was a $300ish paper weight within days of installing it. That was when I started getting into Megasquirt, Perfect Power left a real nasty taste in my mouth with piggybacks.

What have you done that is requiring so much engine tuning? Forced induction?

Bryce,

That's what I wanted to hear, but after a couple days hadn't heard any experiences. What year/make/model did you try to install it on, what were you trying to do with it? Who did you get it from, did you talk w/Bob Ida? I've MS'd our XR4Ti, the issue w/the caddy is getting around BOTH the MAP sensor AND MAF, along with the IAT and O2 readings since they're all interrelated and if any one is out of wack you get a default table to keep it running but it disables features and trans shift algorithms I would like to keep, since they've successfully done it in a 2003 FWD Caddy w/stock PCM & harness in their RWD 48' Tucker (http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicles/113_0703_1948_tucker/fabrication.html), it's piqued my interest. I want to do a proof of concept on a remote mount for the Caddy, the remote mount part isn't why I'm interested in it as a challenge, that's actually the easy part, it's getting around the stock PCM w/o throwing codes, that's my ONLY goal, I could run NO2 just as easy but I'd rather have alot of time to test/tune on it which would require bottle refills and i'm also alot more experienced/comfortable w/boost...

gsxturbo,

Do you have any good links on installs on 'unusual' cars?

The car I was using it on was my Fiero. It originally came with the 2.8 V6, but I had swapped in a 3.4 and all sorts of little stuff had been done like exhaust, intake, porting, injectors, etc. so the factory ECM wasn't happy at all (needed lots of work with the fuel/ignition tables). I got it from Ed Senf, who, coincidentally, has been in bed with GRM on a bunch of projects in the past. Ed was literally impossible to get any help out of, after a few months of trying to get emails/calls back I gave up. There were a bunch of us Fiero owners that went through the same thing, and all of us ended up giving up on it after having issues. I think there was a bunch of Miata guys having similar problems back then. That was a long time ago, and I don't fiddle with piggybacks at all anymore.
