Can we have a vintage class? You have to bring your car from when you were in Cub Scouts (verify by bringing at least a picture of you as a youth with the car or preferred, bring the actual trophies).
I have all five of mine, two of which were overall winners, so I could support arrive and drive.
Some of us are more "vintage" than others! I think my awards were printed on papyrus scrolls!
By the time you were old enough to be a Cub Scout, I had a son who was competing as a Tiger.
Are there extra points for each generation of "vintage"?
First, this thread needs to get pinned to the top of the board. Second, the rules need to get "pinned" down. We are under 90 days to the actual event. SVreX, you have been handed the heavy responsibility of command. Consider the input, make a call on the rules and then tell everyone else to deal with it. Feel the power.
For my five cents worth, are we BSA or GRM? What rule set for the $20.12 Challenge is in the spirit of the $2012 Challenge? I favor cost, size, weight limit, no propulsion of any kind. Other than that, anything goes as in the Challenge. Special award for matching your Challenge car.
The second one is built and we plan to bring 3!!
Three Valve cover racers at the GRM Challange = someone's going to race them.
The first 2 weigh about 5 pounds, so I'd like a 6 pound weight limit. :)

(I also recommend using other people's rules-with the caveat that cars must look like GRM-type cars--and even better if they look like your challenge car)
Remember, this will be done inside, in a public place, where there will be small children, etc. So, safe is good.
Right Here. Got to pay attention or you get volunteered for stuff!

I saw it and responded, but never heard back.
Didn't take it too seriously.

FWIW, valve cover race cars will not fit on a pinewood derby track...

OMg! These are brilliant.
The R and D on these machines took months
Where are we at, everybody? Once we get some rules, I'll make a new thread with them and sticky it.
It sounds like we should make the cars fit on a BSA track.
I will get the rules from our local car club to reference for new challenge rules .PM me and I will email the rules to Official for a reference..

I am going to suggest the valve cover racing as a parking lot game.
I just think it's a better fit for GRM than the BSA.
If there are any takers for BSA style pinewood derby, I can supply both a rule set and a track, but I don't think it will thrill you guys as much.
Just a thought...
I’m interested in the BSA style pinewood derby. I still have a few of my old cars around plus it gives me a reason to build a new one. I think the BSA rules will be fine since most of us will try and find loop holes or bend them a little anyway. As much as I’d like to mount some model rocket engines in the back of a derby car, I’d feel bad if I burned down the track and some scouts won’t get to use it.
Ok, maybe a valve cover race would be better, then. Is that what you all would like to do?
OK, I've got my valve cover. Dyno and wind tunnel time has been scheduled. What is the status on the rules?

Is there anyone I can send my valve cover racer to who will race it and send it back? (can't make the trip myself)..
Love this idea!! Super Genius !
Got this from my local car club
I like 'em. Can we get an official blessing?
I've finished three valve cover racers (all about 6 pounds) and they are packed and ready to bring to The Challenge. I guess when you bring 3 you have enough to make your own race. It would be nice to see other valve cover racers there too, but I'll have mine for sure.
Okay, it looks like we'll be doing valve covers, since more of you seem to be making those. Could we have a separate class for BSA cars, then just run them down the valve cover track?
Does anybody have a valve cover launcher that they could bring to the challenge?
I'm in for the valve cover race!!!
Do we get bonus points for bringing something REALLY strange?
