I’m thinking about doing plasti-dip on the Miata because I don’t have the talent/tools/patience to do real bodywork/prep/paint. Considering I’m building the car for autox though will I need to be touching up the plasti-dip after every event for any cones I hit?
WHY ARE YOU HITTING CONES? IT'S AGAINST THE RULES.

E36 M3 happens. :-p

A number of our folks run plasti-dipped (dipt?) Miatae at our events. I've never noticed any with flesh wounds from hitting cones.

This needs to be "say what"
The marks from the cones are hard to wash out, but they are very easy to cover over with a spot spray of new plastic dip. So just bring a can of it with you to the track I guess

Thanks, that’s what I figured. I think it’ll still be the best option for a cheap/diy job I can do with moderate success.

I was told that if you aren't hitting cones, you're not pushing it hard enough.

If you do enough layers (quantity, not one giant layer), it's pretty durable.
'CONES not CATS', Bad Cone, Bad Bad Cone.
I wouldn't know, I never hit any cones ;)

Thanks Jerry!
I was thinking about magnetic numbers & class letters too. I suppose they might also damage the plasti-dip? If so I may do adhesive vinyl meatballs on the door over the plasti-dip, then I could use the magnets without worrying about the finish.
Plasti-Dip, with an appropriate amount of layers, is quite durable. I've got it on my motorcycle. I grip the hell out of the tank with my knees. I've never worn through or inadvertently peeled it.

Friend of mine was told that he would be thrown out of an autocross because he "hit too many cones" and was told to clean it up. I think they were just pissed that he had FTD even with 2 cones on a run.
I want to say it was a local Porsche or Corvette club.

My old club asked someone not to come back because he hit too many cones, but that's because he was drifting (badly). 3 spins and 25+ downed cones on every run was a bit much. Cones aren't cheap, and the $35 entry fee doesn't cover replacing all that many of them.

I have no issues with magnetic numbers and masking tape with my dip. FWIW I use the dipcoat hardener product on the car occasionally which is supposed to make it more durable to scratches and scuffing. My magnetic numbers lost a lot of their staying power once the car was dipped so I always reinforce them with a tape outline.

Very good to know - thanks!

Subarust had plastidip'd front end and hood, done "professionally" meaning real spray equipment and proper coats. That front end survived many a cone and rut in the dirt. And magnet numbers are no problem.

Awesome, glad to hear real-world abuse...er, experience.
