Police avoidance

Some people will go to great lengths...

Both seen in the same parking lot today. 
 

The black one is an S2000 with an LS3. The white one is a BMW with a massive turbo.

You should have swapped plates on the cars.  I bet neither driver would have noticed...ever.

This is an old trick of the Canyon Racers of the '80's in Lambos and RUF Porsche, etc.  

In the day and age of plate readers this is likely less effective and more just aesthetics.  

I am rather surprised that the state plate system allows it.  

I think it's mostly intended to prevent other drivers from accurately calling in your plate when you're driving like an a-hole.

M's and W's would have been my choice... back when I used to drive like an a-hole.

Those are pretty funny. Even now I struggle discerning "l" and "1" in some forums, depending what font is in use. Back in college, I apparently had time on my hands and created my own font, moving the top and bottom pixels on the "l" character one position left and right, respectively, specifically to differentiate the two.

I saw one that did something similar with Bs and 8s as well.

I told the service manager "It's apparent you have 2 kinds of customers. Wealthy people (often businessmen), and drug dealers".

He said "Yep. And 1 of them pays in cash"

Isn't something like that actually inviting the police to find a reason to pull you over, and look for probable cause to search your vehicle?

I think in the future people are going to look at our i/l characters the way we look at old-timey lowercase Fs looking like an S. In many sans-serif fonts they're damn near indiscernible. The I/1/l issue is annoying too but not so much of a PITA outside of programming, however the i/l issue seems to mainly bother me in news articles.

Edit: More on-topic, I don't think confusing character sequences on custom plates are allowed in Ontario but I do see people driving around with license plate covers tinted so darkly that I'm surprised they don't get pulled over by the first cop they run across.

Surprised that someone isn't using a combination of "O"s and "0"s.

Or buy a License Plate Flipper.

Someone I know made a combination of Q's 0's and D's for his license plate...

Get crazy with it. Might not do much for cops, but plate readers are another story.

Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, a license plate frame is considered enough to warrant pulling you over.

Nevermind all the dealer's installing them at purchase.

My skyline may or may not have been john's rusty q45 for 3 weeks between temp tag expiration and my birthday so I didn't have to pay almost a full year of fees for 3 weeks of use. 

Those old Q45 plates are some amazingly well traveled plates!
