This is a 4 cylinder that went from 1.4 litres up to a 2.0 and powered everything from the lowely 124 TC (the sedan) up to world rally winning chassis in the Delta Integrale. Truely an engine that needs to be more than a footnote in history
Guess I should throw some pictures up:
The Fiat 124 went from something like this:
To this.. the Ultimate 124 engine as found in the Lancia Delta S4. You try to figure out the flow paths on the turbos (with their missing intercoolers) it will hurt your brain.
Yes, it is a twin turbo 4 cylinder engine with the intake feeding in between the cams and exhausting out on either side of the head like a mini v8.

Any and all engines from Jano, Lampredi or Columbo.
Cosworth BDA
Muira V-12
B/O/R 215
Ford 221-260
There's too many to list, but in terms of sound output, the Porsche flat 12 is my favorite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha2ZqP-Hnvc
I think a better question is, WORST motors of the 60s, there aren't many, and most of those can be argued in favor of in hindsight.
Javelin wrote: Um, all of them? No, seriously. The 60's produced soooo many good motors that it's unreal. Even the "uncommon" stuff like AMC's, big Buick, etc are still being used to make huge power today. Heck, I don't think I can even name a "bad" motor from the 60's...
Triumph Stag V8?

That isn't the S4 engine, that is the ECV2 Triflux.
This is the S4 engine:

That is the final prototype before Group B was killed off. It never saw a race in anger, but had plenty of testing.

Well, since I was born in 1981, it appears all the engines from the 60's were the best!
Which ones where terrible then? Everything can't be the best.
In reply to neon4891:
I assume you mean 426 Hemi and not 427... Did Ford or Chevrolet do a hemi-head derivative of their 427's?
Also, I know "$ V-8" means cheap V-8, and this isn't supposed to be a competition, but I'm not sure if the 318 is really all that great. They last a long time, but so do a lot of other things.
4 Cyl for me would be the 3.0L Buick. They still use it in boats.
6 cyl would have to be the slant 6
V8 I'll have to say buick 455 for performance. Huge bore, short stroke, great potential.
budget V8 - Caddy 500.
