My friend called me and said that now that cold weather is here, she is getting a popcorn smell.
First thought was coolant leak but that smells more sickly sweet. Second is something in the heater ducts.
any other suggestions .
she is a distance away so I have not been able to check it out.
Did she call from the theater?
Sure it isn't the smell of poorly catalyzed, partially burnt gasoline you get from a cold engine on a cold morning?
Does it have a cabin air filter? Might check there.

Animals dropping junk in HVAC system, now getting heated up since she's running the heater?

I'd guess somethings in the heating system, leaves, a squirrel, whatever. Plus i'm sure there's a ton of junk caught in the filters from months of non use.
I have about 25 lbs of Cub Scout popcorn. If I were to dump some into a co-workers exhaust would it pop as they drove home?

Most likely- not. Popcorn works with the oil that it's in to pop, otherwise it would just start on fire. So, I suggest adding some popcorn oil to it too- just to be safe.
Following that logic, if popcorn kernels were added to the engine oil, would popped popcorn come out the exhaust?
In reply to JohnRW1621:
No, engine oil is about half as hot as it needs to be for popcorn. Maybe an old air cooled Volkswagen driven in anger on a hot day.
I don't use any oil, just a cheap air popper I got for Christmas and it seems to pop just fine.
In reply to Wally:
Try popping it in bacon grease sometime, you'll never go back.
just out of curiosity.. she does not have kids does she?
