If someone wanted to build a period correct early 90's car, what were some of the more popular aftermarket gauges of the time?

I'm also talking about individual gauges, not the three pod, under dash mounted gauges you could get down at the Federated Auto Parts for $15. cheeky

I recall VDO offering plenty of gauge options along with the ever popular column mounted  Autometer tach.

When did Monster Tachs come out?

The Sun Supertach was still around, but it was more of a 70's era thing.  The Autometer monster tach was the next big thing.  I think I would use the original Autometer stuff if I was reproducing something American from the 80s.  I'm not sure they would be correct in a Euro or road race build.

In reply to Streetwiseguy :

I used plenty of Autometer gauges in the '80s, and I never worked on anything American.

VDO for sure. That was the go to spec. Sun for me was more of an 80s thing. Autometer  has been around a long time.  I used them back in the 70s with my dad and I think you can still purchase there stuff new today.

The three panel individual gauges were $100 from Super Shops in the 90s, so it's the same E36 M3.

Look at any 70s car that still exists, you will see many screw holes under the dash where those gauges were hastily installed to where they'd never be seen.

When I put some gauges in the 944, I'm going with VDO, but that's mostly because Germany.

Where I lived we all used Autometer in the 80's-90's. Sun were the most popular in the 70's and before that it was Stewart Warner IIRC.

Yup, VDO. I worked for a VDO W-D 1992-'94, and moved a ton of product for them.

VDO and Dakota Digital for sure were both the HOT gauges in the 90's. Auto Meter was around, their white-faced gauges came out in the early/mid-90's and got really popular.

I'm not sure what your point is, it was a joke. Also, I bought three 3 pod gauges for my '65 Chevelle back in 1998 for $30 at the local Carquest.

I had Autometer on almost everything.  I'd like to find some GM branded ones for my Monte.
