I want to change my timing belt on my 1984 944. I see that I have many options and that they cover a wide range of prices. What would you do and why?

Unless I get an educated recommendation from an enthusiast forum, I go with Gates for all my timing belt needs. I believe they are OEM in many cars.
In fact, Gates is usually the recommendation from said forums.
I suggest you go ask here. l A wealth of knowledge on Pelican. You can probably borrow the tensioning tool you need to do the job from a local Porsche club.
This should help:

The Gates belt is good, there was a kevlar belt available for a little while, which is better for track cars, but the Gates is good. The Italian made Conti belt seems to have had issues from time to time.
That said, contact Sunset Porsche and order the parts from them. The prices will be reasonable and the Porsche branded rebuilt water pumps are miles better than many of the aftermarket ones. Sunset does a great job at discounting Porsche brand parts to relatively reasonable levels.
Borrow the tensioner from a local euro service shop or somewhere online.
