OK looking at cheap CL 996's what on earth would cause this much movement in the crank? I am assuming the motor and case are TOAST at this point....

I think it's safe to say that is trashed. :)

Agreed, case too most likely is my guess, but I am no Porsche expert....

Duh, everyone knows it's the throwout bearing that holds the crank in on a P car.  Put the tranny back in and it will be fine I'm sure.  Who's idea was it to run the engine that way?  Some peoples kids, I tell ya.

Now if you see the other end of the crank doing that, you have problems.

Seller was trying to find issue.... Took video to show to people looking to buy car.... Hes fully open to having some rather massive issue.

What might have caused this?! Seems like way more play than should be there even is the bearings are completely gone.

Vw bugs sometimes broke the crank in half , so it would still run but you could pull the front pulley and have more than a quarter inch play ..

I would be curious to take a look at the IMS Bearing.  If that movement is the crank and not just the flywheel, that should be leaking oil like a sieve.

I'd be worried that the crank cradle is damaged - which requires a complete strip down of the engine to get at.

I'm pretty sure the engine is garbage at this point....

One time on my old VW I discovered 1/4" play in the crank. Didn't leak more than normal, and ran just fine. That engine was mostly a porsche. I rebuilt it anyway. I'd say the car in the video is probably still faster than my old VW. Doesn't mean it isn't borked.

I see a flywheel jumping around. Wouldn't be the first one to come loose. Without digging deeper it's not possible to make further assessments.

There is a 996 in my garage that's for sale and the crank doesn't do that if you're interested.

Looks to me like it needs the Renegade Hybrid treatment

That’s a 996 roller and worth 5k at most.

The engines cost more to rebuild than a complete running well cared for car costs.

My friend bought an early 996 with low miles and a bum engine awhile back. He got a rebuilt engine, had it installed, and sold the car for $20-22k and pretty much broke even on the deal.
