Unfortunately, I can't make it this year but if any of you get a chance, you should check out the Porsche Type 64 being auctioned by RM.
Chances are, you'll never get to see it again. They made three and this is the only one left.
I thought there was one at the Revs Institute but I was mistaken.

I saw that car back when Otto Mathe had it , he changed it to right hand drive back in the 40s-50s as he lost a limb in the war,
Then a Swiss guy I know bought it after Otto passed. Then it kicked around Austria ....
Not sure who would step up for 20 million but you have to start somewhere.....

Germans wearing socks and sandals as early as 1950!
Neat car.
Air cooled Porsche prices are crazy right now, I can understand why they decided to sell lol

I should think that Porsche themselves might buy it.
That thing was probably mistaken for a ufo when it first rolled out.

Porsche could have bought it anytime in the last 20 years since Otto pasted , for some reason they never wanted too ,
They did spend a bunçh of money having a replica alloy body she'll hammered out that sits at the bottom of the escalator when you walk into the Porsche museum , it's just the body , no chassis .

In German in the late 30s there was a big push for aerodynamics in the race cars , Mercedes had speed record cars , BMW had the aerodynamic 328 Mille miglia car , Adler had a couple , so this VW was just another one......

The pre-war German race cars are absolutely stunning.
Auto Union had some incredible stuff.
Also, the Tatra 87 influence is pretty strong.

I see a lot of extra parts. How much of the assembled car is original?

Andy Prill, well-respected marque specialist who has recently inspected the Type 64, adds: “I’ve seen countless special Porsches in my career, but nothing like this. I was very careful in examining the authenticity of the Type 64, no. 3 and its chassis. After spending many days with the car, I have found evidence that all key components of the cars are original as built in 1939/1940. This is the most historically significant of all Porsche cars and it is simply incredible to find the very first Porsche in this original condition.”
Considering what it is and how few owners it's had, it's probably as original as one would expect a 60+ year-old prototype racing machine to be.
RM / Sotheby's is a reputable auction house. Based on the dealings I've had with them on a few cars, they wouldn't knowingly misrepresent a car going through one of their auctions. There's just too much at stake.
One of the reasons people pay what they do for auction cars is there is the security that the most knowledgeable people for that car have been contacted and have gone over it to verify everything.

Well the original wheels, hubs and brake parts are not part of the car so Mr Prill's assessment is a bit off. Furthermore, there appears to be a bent chassis and some other body parts not assembled. also a fuel tank along with the parts for the original RHD. Lots of 70 year old cars have more of their originals than this Porsche.
Now where do get this as a fiberglass body kit for a type 1?

Originally it would have had cable brakes , l am sure they got upgraded ,
Otto Mathe changed it to RHD , so one of the other owners changed it back to original.
A race car is a moving Target when it gets to doing a restoration , do you pick how it was built Day One , how it was raced at a famous race ,. How it was later raced by a famous driver .
This car was in the public for many years and a "prop" when Otto Mathe was selling his oil additive at Auto shows , that's where I saw it first.
Anyway it's an interesting car with a lot of history , I hope it gets bought by someone that will get it out in the public some , and not hidden away......

Feel free to ask them about it, they would know more than I would.
Most of my pre-war knowledge relates to pre-war full Classic American cars, the only pre-war German stuff I've gotten my hands on are a couple Mercedes.
Here is an interesting YouTube video about a PreWar Mercedes race car

Period photos show the car to be RHD with small 4 bolt pattern wheels. A photo of the original hubs along with brake parts shows hydraulic brakes. I agree it is an interesting car with a lot of history.

I feel free, on my own, to do lots of stuff. Don't permission from others. But clearly this car is not in original condition, which is likely why the Porsche folks have not bought it.
Many early 50s German / Austrian race cars used Fiat aluminum brake drums and the 4 bolt wheels that went with them , better than the cable brake on all VWs up to 1948 ,
They were also in love with hole saws and lightened anything they could with a hole !
Again what time period do you call correct ? 1939 ? 1949 ? Or sometime in the 50s when Otto was still racing it ?
It's a moving Target , and new owner can decide to change the horn button to a correct one :)
So, whose girlfriend do I need to be to get into the RM auction?
