I generally don't get PPIs done. However if all goes to plan i may be going to look at and purchase a car that is quite some distance from me. It is a S type R. I found a dealership about five miles from the used car dealer that the car is at so i am thinking that who better to inspect this car than a Jaguar dealer. Any reason why i should or should not use a dealer instead of a independent. Seems like a better option to me. I am betting it may cost me a bit more but i am hoping that they will do a better job as they should know the car better.
What say you all.
By the way the dealer i am looking to purchase the car from encouraged me to get a PPI. From a place of my choice.
Try to get a copy of the report/format before the inspection. Sometimes the Inspection format can be VERY superficial....ask me how I know.

That is a pretty obscure car. Just because it is a dealer inspection does not mean the technician assigned to it will actually have any experience with that model. That is a question you must ask to be sure the guy doing the PPI knows what to look for.
I got a dealer PPI on my E60 and used the report as a punch list to get it up to snuff. What the dealer wanted $5k for, I DIY'd with OE-supplier parts for about $600.
The PPI is always interesting. I really hope it comes back clean. On the other hand if they find something I can use there findings as a bargaining chip. Or just walk away. I really dought that will happen but who knows. It presents as an excellent car with all dealer service records that are up to date.
If I could find a indipendant jaguar specialist near by would that be a better option and if so why. The bad part to all of this is that I will pro only never see or do business with who ever I use again just due to the location and that is why I am leaning towards the dealer as I could take up any issues that crop up with jaguar corporate. I am not sure they would do anything really but it is at least a toney bit of leverage that may help me.

Getting an inspection - for a reasonable fee - by a party with no skin in the game has been my best bet from past experience. The shop that you are paying to do the work is working for you, and has no "business" reason to give you an untrue bill of health. Sure, you will not be a long term customer, but you are their customer at that moment. Any dealer has skin in the game, even if that skin is to try to steer you to an alternate car in their lot.
My 2 cents FWIW.
i dought the dealer has one of these on there lot that I am looking at doing the ppi. These are kind of rair cars. This is a major reason why I am thinking that a jaguar dealer may be a better option for the ppi. At least they should have had some experience with them where as I bet many if not most indipendants have never seen one.
