I think you'd win that argument.

That requires me to re-set the cruise to a lower speed... Fortunately, most of the times they do E36 M3 like that it's in the absolute middle of nowhere with no traffic around, so I don't have to rush to resolve it and get out of the left lane (as there's nobody behind me, so I'm not in the way).

I've taken to slowing down until they pass. Sometimes I have to slow down 15 mph before they do anything. I could swear they are brain dead.
Closely related are the ones that will tail gate you for miles in the middle lane (with the passing lane clear), and then you move over and they suddenly fly by. I don't get it. Sometimes I move over just to see which type of moron they are.

You move over, and gradually start to overtake them, but once you get alongside, they start matching your speed. WTF?
it's really impressive to do in a Kenworth straight truck. People really get the hint when the "big rig" suddenly flies by them.. especially when you consider how much road it takes for one of those to build up enough momentum to do that
I find a lot of oblivious drivers drive by gravity. When alone, they will travel their own speed, usually relative to the speed limit, but as soon they get near enough for another vehicle's gravitational forces to exert some pull on them, they'll go that speed. Even if it's faster or slower their previous speed. I've even witness the gravitational pass off where said orbiter will leave my space by being captured in in someone else gravitational field, and I will continue on with no more clingy satellites.

I have LITERALLY slowed down 30mph and they refused to pass. Yes... I went from 75 (in a 70) to the 45mph minimum. It wasn't until 2 miles of that and a steady stream of cars going past that I finally turned my flashers on. They STILL didn't pass. So I dropped 4 gears and pulled away for a couple miles.

I'm not at all miserable with life. I have no idea where you pulled that out of.
But my comment was only in jest.
When I was younger however I did some questionable things. I have passed in the median, I have passed on the shoulder, I have passed a fire truck with its lights and sirens going on a two lane road. I wasn't going anywhere, I just liked to drive fast. I survived my wreckless youth, and managed not to hurt anyone else in the process. I'm twenty years beyond that now.

You just summed up my youth in a very PC sort of way.
In fact I can add to this that racing probably saved me from being a complete idiot and doing something really stupid. the more I raced the slower and more apathetic I have become to driving on the road.
alfadriver wrote: So, what do you do when you are in the left lane, going over the speed limit, and passing a train of vehicles when a car comes up behind you. Mind you- there are 6-10 cars directly in front of you. And you are going slower than you want. Moreso, when the closing car is one you passed when the road was clear. (as I see it, there's one reality when the road is 10-20% occupied, and a different one when it's +80%)
That, unfortunately, is called "traffic".
I'd like an addendum that if your passing delta is less than 5mph, you are not passing and you should move the hell over.

Because I have opinions that differ from yours makes me angry? I cannot understand the way your mind operates.

Tailgaters don't tailgate because they want to go faster. They tailgate because they think 5 feet is an appropriate following distance and they just want to turn their brain off and follow someone.
I've done this too. Expletive in a BMW with HIDs tailgating me in an otherwise empty 3 lane section of I-71. I was down to 45mph trying to entice a pass. Never happened.
The zombie apocalypse happened already.

I'm very happy.
I've seen you reference the fact that you think I'm angry in the past.
I have no idea where you got that from.
I think ego can play into this as well. I (hypothetical driver) assume that the speed I am going is the correct speed, if I am in the left lane and you come up behind me than you are an unsafe driver who is going too fast. If I come up on your bumper in the left lane then why are you going so slow? I think people justify their actions compared to others all the time and assume what they are doing is right and what everyone else is doing is wrong.
That being said, the left lane is for passing, plain and simple. Seems like European drivers can grasp that, why not ours? That, and people going a certain speed then slowing down as they check their phone, only to realize they slowed down as they are getting passed and promptly speed back up...
CobraSpdRH wrote: That being said, the left lane is for passing, plain and simple. Seems like European drivers can grasp that, why not ours?
That would require them to cruise, instead of sleep until the radar tone goes off. And they make more money writing speeding tickets.
Its a pointless discussion. Everyone is the best driver, and in 10 years you will no longer be allowed to have control anyway. The government will let you sit behind the wheel and turn it a bit, but the computer will make all the major decisions. Hard to tail gate when your car simply refuses to get any closer.

I can't understand that mentality. How fast I want to drive is how fast I want to drive, how fast you want to drive is how fast you want to drive, the sooner we're out of each other's way the happier we both will be. It's not that hard.
I actually got a wave from someone the other weekend when I was hauling ass to someplace, passing a line of vehicles, and saw someone coming up behind me at a pretty high speed difference. I was able to tuck in to let him by before he had to slow down, then get right back over and finish passing the cars, without any real fuss. But you need situational awareness for that, not brain-off cruise-on.
(And then later that day I saw the highway patrol pull someone over who was driving in the left lane, not passing anyone. They DO that in Ohio. Ticket for improper lane use, that is)
In reply to Knurled:
That's exactly how I do it too. You're correct, it's not that hard. Like you said, situational awareness.
Most people here are pretty good about it, once you get away from the cities.

Yeah this type stuff really gives me a good laugh. Once a young lady in a big Durango matched my speed as I tried to pass her. I disengaged cruise and she slowed to stay next to me. So I used the cruise controls to slowly accelerate to near 100mph. She still stayed along side. I glanced over a few times and she was just staring down the road. Not on a phone or anything. So as we approached a often used state trooper hiding spot. I did a maximum brake down to the posted limit and was surprised how she panicked, jumped on her brakes the rear end got loose. She drifted a little onto the shoulder then collected herself. Then as I pulled alongside her I could see her staring at me like I was crazy. Weird how people are. I finally just stopped at the rest stop to get a gap.
