The CEL on my newest mistake (1986 325e) is on. I am COMPLETELY unfamiliar with this car and will start going at it tomorrow after work. My question is how do I pull the codes on this to see whats up?
If it helps, I believe the engine management is Bosch K- Jetronic from what I've read on teh interwebz.
Read the smoke signals. Tip: they're in a dialect that southern German.

VERY helpful haha... This whole time I thought they were NORTHERN German!
the PEAKE or bavauto code tools are pretty good for older bmws. some only have the round 19 pin plug and iirc e's have the D shaped smaller plug that might need an adapter.
what's the issue you're dealing with? sometimes older than 88-ish (D-shaped plug) dont really offer much code help unless something's really really bad. ive typically treated them diagnostically as though theyre pre-computer.
Is it the CEL? Or the flashing "check" light?
The former is read with the scanner, but the latter is related to the button above the rear view mirror.

Its the CEL I believe, I would go out and look but I'm at work. 99% positive its the CEL and not just "check". Ill check when I get home in about 45 minutes.

Must be pretty bad then lol It's an 86... crap. Guess I gotta buy a scan tool.
pull the bulb. it's really the easiest way to fix it.

That light goes away when you push the check button on the overhead fault light panel AND have stepped on the brakes.
