A bit of M5 porn for you. I took the top off the intake plenum a couple of weeks ago. How cool is this?

Sexy! First "bundle of snakes" intake I've ever seen. Just curious - why'd you have the top of the plenum box off?

That is cool! Makes me wonder if a sweet looking clear intake plenum cover could be fabbed up!

I'm getting a MAF error code, but the car has new BMW MAFs. I wanted to know if each MAF fed one bank or if it was a common plenum, part of troubleshooting for potential leaks. And I was curious It was only a matter of time before I pulled that plenum off just to take a look.

I just got back from my mechanic's shop. The radiator was the part that failed. There is a hairline crack along the upper part of the driver side plastic tank end cap (not sure if that is the official name for the part). So, under the famous "while you're in there" phrase, he is going to replace the upper/lower hoses, expansion tank, breather hose, etc. Not sure yet if any motor damage was done and I guess we won't know until he gets the cooling parts buttoned back up.

Don't forget Water pump and to also check the valve cover gaskets. The typically BMW 100,000 mile check/replacements includes those. The next on the list will be the suspension bushings.
1 Things that deal with coolant
2 Things that go on top of the head
3 Things that aren't metal, but are in the suspension

Thanks for the recommendations.

we had an M5 that ran all kinds of bad with strange codes thrown, plus it was oil fouling plugs quickly so we took off the plenum cover, disconnected the MAFs and ran the engine open like that. turns out the driver's side VANOS assembly had a small oil leak and followed a passage up to the plenum where it was squirting oil all over the trumpets there. weird problem but a cool view.

Is that just cosmoline on the trumpets or oil?

Probably a bit of oil, most intake manifolds have a bit inside from the PCV system after 100,000 miles.
