A local dealer has a very clean 85 Chevette w/MT on their lot. I’m thinking that would be an awfully good candidate for a GM 2.0t. I’m pretty sure a new trans and probably a narrowed 9” would be needed, but what about engine height? Would the OHC design and turbo be too high? Would a custom fiberglass cowl induction hood give away too much info to the beast beneath? 1.8t swap better? Discuss.
9" is overkill in that application. There are better optons.
a 10 bolt or even a mustang 7.5 should be fine or even a toyota axle.
Have you ever driven a Chevette? They are scary with the stock 65 horsepower.
They don't have to be.
I drove one for a few years in the 80's and one of my buddies raced one in mini stock for years, even won a championship one season.

someone put a big block 427 in this one so 2.0t should be double and much easier and tamer.
And we can't forget this
Bad seed part 1
Bad seed pt 2
Bad seed pt 3
I don't generally keep old magazines, but I still have this copy.

This is a brilliant plan. I don't know why they have a chevette, but you should have a chevette.
In reply to MrChaos : I think my dad’s friend still has an old Toyota Corolla SR-5 rear end lying around. Probably a much cheaper way to go.
In reply to MotorsportsGordon :
I used to drag race slot cars at a shop that had a NHRA Super Gas Chevette, with a 468ci big block. Tube frame car, so lots of room, but it was still an impressive build overall.

Look for a used 4th gen Camaro 7.5. They get swapped out because the stock LS1 is known to break them. In a lighter, lower powered Chevette, it will live. They come with a limited slip.
Didn't Vauxhall have a hotted up one in the UK in the 80s? Might be a place to look for upgrades.

I sure as hell hope you are going to upgrade the brakes first. Chevettes wouldn't stop properly with the stock drivetrain. My grandfather had one. They had antilock brakes before ABS was even available.
wait, an actual car dealer has a 1985 Chevette on it's lot?
That in itself is probably something that hasn't happened in roughly 20 years....

That's nuthin', I had a non-turbo diesel Rabbit with 38 horsepower. I just don't talk about it much for obvious reasons...,

I see your twin-turbo LS Chevette and raise you a twin-turbo 598ci big block Chevette running 7s

Wouldn't it be easier & cheaper to just put in lockers?

They used to say if you needed to stop those old VW’s you turned on all the accessories and the drain on the alternator and engine will slow it down.
