I need an engine for my Sonoma,it's a 99 2200 4cyl automatic and all the salvage yards are telling me it's a 99 specific mototr and I'm having a problem finding one.
Does anyone know if I can use a different block, maybe from a different year or even a Cavalier/Sunfire maybe
?
I've tried the S10 forums but they all seem to just say put in a V8. Not what I'm looking for.

its not specific.......any 2.2L 4cyl s10 engine from that era works. I believe any OBD-II so 96-04
Actually, there are some differences, but you can overcome them. You can actually use '98 and '99 S10 engines, but the EGR valve and head port design is a little different. You can also use '98-'00 Cavalier and Sunfire, but check the EGR system on those too. They're different too, but you can make it work.

agreed, you'll run into differences on anything, but most of the time reuse most of your stuff and treat the donor engine as a long block. generally the best rule of thumb there.....I figured the cavi/sunfire 2200's were a different mount design as most fwd cars are....so I didn't include them
Thanks, knew I could count on getting the answer here...
That motor is slow in my Cavilier. I can't imagine having it in a truck.
it's no speed demon for sure, but it gets me to the scrap yard and work and town dump with no complaints, well no complaints until it broke. I don't expect it to be fast, just reliable and economical.
It's not that bad. Gets great gas mileage for a truck.

lol.....I had a 00 2.2L and lost a pair of m50 5sp's at precisely 35k on each......and a rear end at 68k.....got rid of it shortly thereafter....and got a 98 4.3L 5sp, lost 2 rear ends and an engine, but the rebuild of the 4.3L would have been grass roots worthy.....
