Just wanted to run this one by the board and get everyones opinion.
I was at the do-it-yourself salvage yard this morning under the hood of a car when up walks another guy and plunks his tool bag next to mine and proceeds to start taking parts off the engine. I was essentially done and had already removed what I needed but he didn't know that. Because I was done I just packed up and left. I always wait for someone to be done or ask politely if they would mind if I grabbed a quick part if they don't need it that is.
What's everyone's take on this? What's the junkyard etiquette? Thanks in advance.
Take the hood prop rod. When the hood comes down and whacks him in the head he might get the mesage.
I say first come first served and stay away from the car Im canibalizing. I would waint on him to finish, I expect the same curtosy.

Manners? Etiquette? Surely you jest.

I agree with what porksboy said.
And don't call me Shirley
I don't mind working on the same car as someone else, but if they were there first I ask if they are planning on getting the part I'm looking for. I would like the same courtesy in return.
I agree w/ first come first served but don't actually expect that courtesy in return from the knuckle draggers around here. I'll even lend a hand or tools if needed.
... and don't get me started on hunting and fishing courtesy... read lack of it

"Oh neat, we both must have the same car. What parts are you looking for?"
Proceed to start removing all these parts then hide them in a random trunk.
Nah, I'm just kidding. That would make me annoyed, though.
I always ask. Even if I need a taillight and they have their head buried somewhere under the hood.
Then again, English is the minority language at a junkyard anymore, so they don't always understand me.
Last time I was at pull apart a guy (gringo) walking around asked me for a pair of pliers. I only take my crash kit with me to the yard so I didnt worry too much about loaning them. I forgot about them, he was waiting outside the building so he could return them.
Yeah, it is ironic that as the world becomes more "connected", common courtesy is the first casualty. I've had folks nearly knock me down trying to get to a parts car when it would have taken no effort to ask if I was about finished. NO ONE wants to wait for anything anymore.
I often think I was born at just the right moment in time (early '50s) and I expect to "kick off" just about the time these numbnuts take over the world.
In this case you should wait for him to remove the part he came for then pick it up and walk away.

only thing worse than adults acting poorly is their children are learning from their actions

So, I laughed out loud, disturbing the missus. Then I read your response to the missus, and she laughed out loud as well.
The thing that pisses me off the most are the asshats that wreck perfectly good parts to get what they want.
I've also had individuals walk up, grab a part I just removed and walk off with it. I tend to stay away from the P-Y-O's in LA and San Diego now, the hostility from certain ethnic groups just isn't worth it.

this. A guy was tearing apart an old Benz last time I was at the yard....full interior and some engine stuff. I just wanted the yellow headlight inserts. I asked him if he was going to take them, he said no, I went ahead and pulled them.
manners are manners anywhere.

odd, at the yards around here (which are full of various immigrants - mostly hispanic and african on "mission" part hauls), I always find that the people who are most hostile/disrespectful are the northern Maryland white guys (btw, I'm a white guy). They're always looking pissed off if you come anywhere near a car they're working on, and will just stare you down until they're sure you're not trying to steal their parts or tools.
The immigrants/non-caucasians are far more apt to say "how you doing" or give a nod, or lend a hand as you're trying to wrangle a door off a car or something.....
bad conversation topic either way, but had to throw that out there.
guess living in the south has its perks... everyone seems to be fairly friendly even when they don't speak the language...
Speaking of etiquette, am I the only one who absolutely has to piss immediately after paying the entrance fee at a pick-n-pull?
While I don't spend a lot of time at the JY I have never had any of these bad things happen..
And I have had someone help me once with a part I was fighting with.
It never hurts to be courteous...

when I'm at the pick-n-pull, I pee in the nearest junked BMW 5-series I can find. Because I'm elitist like that....
