I need one.

Googling "quiet turn signal" gets page after page of aging baby boomers whose priuses and tauruses aren't making enough turn signal noise, and who need louder flashers to keep them from driving for hours with their turn signals on.

I, on the other hand, want a quiet -- or even silent -- flasher. There are these lights on the dashboard, it turns out, that tell me when my turn signals are on.

The car is a 95 VW Jetta; the fuse box/relay are in the passenger compartment and not really anything I can insulate. The flasher itself seems to vibrate the entire fuse box unit... really annoyingly loud.

Ideas? Thanks, Matt

Wrap something like Dynamat around it?

Didn't help.

I'm remembering fondly the JC Whitney turn signal relays that would play 'Love Me Tender' as you make your right-hand turn...

You might have luck finding a compatible relay that makes less noise, but all relays typically have that 'click-clack' character - it's the nature of the device. Isolating it is your best bet. Maybe stick the relay in a small plastic cup, then fill the cup with Great Stuff? Make sure you can still get the plug out...

Find out the type of thermal flasher you have, go to local auto parts store and get an electric flasher. Way more quiet, and you could plug in leds into your turn signals as well!

For instance my trans am uses and EL12 thermal flasher, went and bought an EL12 electric flasher and "BAM" no more noise! Popped in LED towers into turn signals and good to go.

I achieve this by using hand signals.

or you can just move here and never use your turnsignals again. I almost believe they were optional on cars sold here in NJ

Heh. Now I just have to peel the dynamat off to see what the shell says... that stuff sticks pretty well!

Thanks for the suggestions Matt

You can order them online or go to local Discount, Autozone, etc. and they should have it.

Turn up the damn radio. That fixes all car related noises.

Haha I was gonna say drive in NJ

I once drove a Saab with a bad radio amplifier and there were no turn signal noises. Those evidently come out of the speakers on new Saabs...

Our '02 Camry has a really quiet flasher. I don't know if it's the flasher unit or any insulation Toyota might be using.

The next time you're following an aging baby boomer who's turn signal is forever flashing, note the car and order one of those flasher units.

I'm one of those half deaf baby boomers who want the louder turn signal. Its not in a Prius, but a 22 YO Nissan truck. Also the head light on chime is too quiet. I've drained the battery twice recently. Any body know how to correct these two issues for me?

That doesn't sound like deafness - it sounds like inattentiveness. Maybe after completing a turn... look to see if the blinker returned to the off position? As you exit the vehicle perhaps just a quick check to see if you might have been using the lights? :)

I cant hear the signal relay on my Spitfire, also it doesnt always cancel and the dash light doesnt work. I just make sure the damn thing is off after a turn. Yes I will rewire the car some day.

Find some music you like and play it loud enough so that the person in the car next to you can't hear their own signal even when both their, and your windows are all rolled up.

The local parts store had replacement flashers, or make-em-louder flashers. But no quiet ones.

So I found this: http://superbrightleds.com/flashers.htm

the one that matches the bosch in my car isn't silent, so I bought one of the motorcycle/universal ones and did some soldering.

It's not quiet, it's silent. Win.

even the electronic ones are going to be silent, but still quiet than the thermal...superbrightleds ones were too $, I got a set of them for $10 at discount last summer
