From the maps I saw there was a hole which develops and reseals virtually every year on a cycle, but I can't find those maps just now. At any rate, this is getting close to a political discussion. I think we're saying:
If you vent it, nobody will notice. If you are concerned about the environmental damage (which is a valid concern, in my opinion) then there were several options put forth.
