Trying to do my first clutch change. Should be easy - conventional front to rear layout, RWD. I've got the transmission free and moved back about two inches. I can see the flywheel. I cannot get the darn thing out. I tried sliding back until I hit exhaust and floorpan. I tilted down and the front of the lower bellhousing moves on an arc and comes back and binds on the bottom of the flywheel. How can I make this come out?
Are the motor mounts loose? Not real familiar with that model celi, but I've done RN Trucks and they can't be that much different. Try jacking up the motor at the harmonic balancer.

Is the shift lever still in the box?

I *think* I looked up and it was clear but I’ll check again. And try to tilt the motor a bit.
Tilt the engine as far as you can, may have to loosen exhaust hangers as well. Good choice for a first clutch job, they are pretty easy, I did them when the cars were new...

I'd personally be pulling the shifter if it were me. Then as suggested loosen your engine mounts, Jack the front of the engine up and possibly consider removing the exhaust from the manifold.
Remember, you've got to put it back in eventually. if you're having to fight to get it out, it'll probably fight just as hard if not harder to put it back in. Sometimes it's just better to pull those few extra things to save yourself some headaches come time for reassembly

That's some wise words right there. I was definitely thinking about that when it wasn't coming out. I'm hoping the engine mounts and a little engine tilt will help. Off to the shop in a couple hours to give it a shot.
Is the clutch lever getting stuck somewhere, or maybe the starter. Take a break, then look around and find what is getting stuck.
Maybe tilting the engine/trans will help, but be careful to also support he engine, you don't want the engine falling while pulling on the trans.
Sometimes you just have to say "you're coming out, you Berkeleyer." That seemed to work.
