I am building a 2nd Gen RX 7 for track use and know from my first car (also 2nd gen) that many race seats do NOT fit well. I am trying to get the car off to the cage builder but it would be best to have the seat in hand and hopefully installed before the cage is started. Need to have the car to them by month end. Has anyone had good luck with a particular brand/style/size? The floors in these cars are brutal to work around. Thanks

I have an Ultrashield Rallysport in mine on Planted mounts.

Hey Chuck do you want the stock blue seats you gave me a year or so ago back?

We ran a kirkey 16 in our FC RX-7 chump/lemons car. It worked well enough for our rotating crew of drivers. None of us would describe it as particularly comfortable. But bolted to the floor, it gave enough clearance for the tall guys.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was looking a the Ultrashields on their website, they seem like a good, how is helmet clearance? When sitting in the Corbeau I have in the present car I don't think you could slide a piece of paper between the roof and my helmet.

I'm 6' tall but long in the torso. When sitting, I'm taller than the guy on our team who stands 6'3". With the Kirkey 16 bolted directly to the floor and thin seat padding, I fit.

There isn't oodles head room, but there is enough room. I can touch the roll bar halo with the top of my helmet if I want to, but I can't touch the roof of the car. Ours is a 1986 Rx7 sunroof car with the sunroof guts removed.

What exactly is the issue fitting race seats in the FC? I fit a Sparco Pro ADV Large in my Spec Miata w/o issue and that is a big seat. I'm 5'9", 190#. Should fit fine in an FC but I wouldn't recommend a halo seat in a car that is driven on the street as visibility becomes an issue.

Helmet clearance will be depend on how the seat is mounted as well as the seat itself. Race seats often forego the stock seat mounts for custom mounts that mount to the floor. In my Miata, we used the front mounts and cut out the rears mounting to the floor instead with some custom mounts my roll cage fabricator made.

The Sparcos have been very comfy driving to/from the track.

The FC has almost no flat spots under the seat, humps and curves in all the wrong places. My old car I had to butcher up the floor to make things flat enough to get the seat in. My first try I used the stock slider, I think the seat alone hit the roof. Then I made a bracket that mounted to the stock mounting points but kept the profile low, that still didn't work. Finally I ran bolts through pieces of 1/4" x 2" flat stock from the under side and up through the floor into the seat base mounting holes. That at least worked but it took a few tries to get the seat in the correct location so the floor looks like swiss cheese when the seat is out. The other problem with the seat in the old car is that the base is too thick, between the mounting tabs on the bottom and the base it has to be 2" thick. Right now I am leaning towards the Ultrashield Rally Sport. It has a thin base, hopefully at least some padding and they are a reasonable price. With any luck it will fit, that is the toughest part you have to buy something to discover it doesn't fit. Fortunately this car will see no street use so long distance comfort is not an issue. Thanks again for the inputs. And Chris I do not want those seats back, they are yours to keep forever.

All I can say is watch out for anything with wide shoulders. I once picked up some cheap used Corbeau FX1 wide seats but never installed them as they were a bit too wide for me and the car. A quick test fit revealed that I would have had to trim the shoulders to fit inside the doors, so I sold them on to the next guy. A regular FX1 would maybe fit.

A search on the RX7 club forum should reveal some answers for what seats have actually been fitted to one, but as it has been said, it's a tough car to fit seats in, so beware of the potentially unmentionned custom work required to fit some seats.

I run the ultrashield rally seat in my fc. We fit everybody from 5'6" to 6'3" and 300# in that seat with no issues.

We mounted it on stock sliders in the stock location with 1" spacers under the front.

I love this seat!

We did put more padding under the back and shoulder area and the stock cover still fits.

We did offset the seat towards the middle to get our heads away from the side upper rollcage tube.

This is in a lemons and chump car. 2.5 hour stints are acceptable. I won't say it is a lazyboy but you won't get out in pain if you add some extra padding at the pressure points under the cover.
