In the back of Grassroots motorsports magazine, there are classified ads of fully prepped race cars for sale. Under 6k, there are usually 80s to 90s F-bodies and Mustangs, FWD Civics and Golfs, and maybe some 944s in the mix. I would personally do Chumpcar first because spreading the car purchase and maintenance costs with a team will stretch everyone's money. Plus, these entry fees are no joke. Also check the Chumpcar and LeMons forums for cheap race cars.
I personally would not do chump car or lemons. BTDT. A car built for that series would usually require a boat load more money to pass tech and be competitive for a racing club like NASA and SCCA that has cars prepared for actual racing.
The only positive for doing chump or lemons is I can usually call my dad up and he'd be all excited to do something like that with me and friend. Friends would help split the costs.
But I want to do some competitive long term stuff. NASA is really the only series that runs down in South Florida but I'd most likely go back to CFL for Sebring and Daytona instead of running at Homestead.
I don't know why, but I always enjoy reading through threads like this. Maybe because it gives me a glimmer of hope that I may too afford to go racing again sometime.
One note: I know lots of karters, and unless the road race karters have found a way to limit costs that the circle track guys haven't, karting can be very spendy. I know guys that spend some $4-5K on a fully built Briggs and Stratton 5hp for their preteen. Freeken ridiculous.
karting is out of the question for that alone. I remember seeing people spend insane amounts of money on these shifter karts for their kids who barely had an interest in the thing.
Good thing is I've already spotted a miata and rx7 full prepped ITx cars in central florida well within my budget and log books! Progress!
