A friend has been offered a first gen escort gt. Supposedly a running and driving sub 30k mile car. His only interest would be to flip it to someone who might like it more than him.
I know nothing about them. If it had the earlier asymmetrical grill I might be tempted myself.
Is there any interest in Fords attempt at the gti market? Should he leave it on the driveway and not take the risk?
In reply to Trent :
if that is the car then get it and throw it up on cars and bids or BaT and it should sell decently i would imagine
Dude that thing is hot in the market right now. Grab it!

But is it a 1500 dollar car? A 5000 dollar car? We have no idea.
I am sorely tempted by it myself but can't make room in my virtual driveway for it
I had one just like it 25 years ago.... if you weren't on the opposite coast... I'd be messaging you. They were surprisingly fun little cars with the 1.9 HO. The want is high.
I'd assume one that nice might fetch 5k to the right sentimental buyer!
My first car was an 87 Escort GT, same color. Radical asymmetric grille, louvered tail lights, and squared off bumper covers for the 87 model, though.
No sunroof is a bonus.
I agree -- someone will be happy to buy that thing. While objectively not a great car, there is a butt for every seat.
Odd that the style that we laughed about years ago is now cool and in demand
put it on BAT and see where it goes. I would say 7-10K

Ain't that the truth. I was a Ford kid growing up in SE Michigan, and even I knew that this was a poor imitation of a GTI.
But that doesn't mean that it doesn't have value. I think if it's as clean as it looks in these few pics, one of the online auction sites should be able to get you a pretty good chunk of change for it. There's a new one, now, too: Rad For Sale.

If that were nearby for $1500 I'd own it. And likely be living in it.
Not at all what I expected from the title. there are some "moldy" radwood cars that I would drive as a beater car. That would be one, but it have to be a WHOLE lot cheaper that that would sell for. Since I disliked that ford when they came out in late 80, Im embarrassed to admit I actually like that one!
It looks clean, how much would he looking at getting and would it make it cross country?

love the way you think sir!
I'm active in several escort groups, because BG chassis things, and it definitely has value. $6500 would cause it to not last long, on BaT you may see $8k or more.
That thing looks way nicer than I expected when I clicked the thread.
I drove one exactly like that to my Senior Prom. Borrowed from my date's father...... Oh the memories
If the mileage checks out, I could see this easily going for 5k+ with a little tidy up. Especially on BaT. Could be a wildcard on Cars and Bids, especially if it catches the attention of Doug Demuro and he wants to review it.
That is a rare car these days. There is a whole generation out there (me included) that would have given up body parts to have one of those but we were stuck in the regular version of the escort. I made a bunch of quick cash doing timing belts in those cars in the early 90s. For about three summers it seemed I was doing 2-3 of them every weekend in my driveway.

Well, when he showed up with the agreed upon amount of cash an hour after making the verbal deal the couple decided that they were going to instead give the car to their grandson. No emotional loss. It was just going to be a flip experiment for him. Lame when folks do that though.
Hope it doesn't get treated like a gold 2000 Buick Century

Ugh. That's not going to end well.
Now that the deals off... can I ask how much we were talking?

In reply to Saron81 :
$1500-2000 was where they were negotiating. I am sure it was settled in the middle.

Thanks.
Man... that would've been a sweet pickup!
