So.... with Rallycross, do stand around in the hot sun for ~ 8 hours to get ~ 4 runs / ~2-3 minutes of run time like you do in a day of Autocross?

We normally get six runs of about 2:00 lap. Start @ 10 am finish by 5 or so. The day we had 43 cars we didn't finish until almost 7 pm.

I helped run it, so I was kept busy timing cars when I wasn't in the car.

We typically get 8-10 runs depending on turnout. This last Saturday we had 11 runs total.

We get 8 timed runs, sometimes a recon lap at speed, sometimes a parade lap to scope out the course. We are rather lucky to run at a private off road facility and we can do free runs after the event as long as you want.

If we have a full event (60 cars), we usually get a very minimum of 9-10 runs or so, at 70-120 seconds each (so 15-20 total minutes of run time).

We've had events with lower entry numbers where we were doing 15-20 runs. Hell, we had one non-points event at a new venue farther out that only had about 15-20 cars show up. I think I got 32 runs that day, lol.

Our first runs usually roll out at 930am and we finish up by about 430. Our local courses are set up so there may be 3-4 cars on course at once....

The standing around is much better for rallycross than autocross. Autocross, it's just a parking lot and the cars for the most part are just driving and squealing tires (with an occasional spin or dude trying to drift). Rallycross the cars are always doing something.....sliding, throwing up dirt roostertails, spinning out, going off the course and into tall grass, or whatever. I used to hate working course for autocross. Rally-x working course is actually kind of fun if you're at a corner with interesting gates or terrain.

curious - how many cars on course do you guys run? With 43 cars at our venue, I'd expect we'd all get around 15 runs of slightly under 2:00 and still finish by 430 or so. 6 runs seems like a low number of runs for having such a long course - unless the course doubles back on itself or something?

Always interesting with different venues to see how the setup affects how many cars on course at once.

You're in Atlanta, so you should be able to just walk out of your front door and find one for sale at a bargain bin price.

May I direct you to my thread: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/beater-rallycross-car-what-the-heck-am-i-doing-her/73076/page4/

edit: you're already there. The Audi would be a pig, but it would probably be fun to drive until something expensive broke.

The people who put the events on are a Rally club and are extremely careful about safety. There are parts of the course that cannot be observed from the Start/Finish line and therefore they only run 1 car at a time. The course does not double back on itself.

We used to hand time everything but our Provincial Rally group bought timers that could handle more than 1 car, but most people want to drive and the crew that runs it is very small. You are not required to work when you are not running.

Only at Nationals. At regional events we've had scoring in the 1100-1200 second range.

Interesting. So I guess you guys don't really have many cones or anything, then, if there aren't course workers out there?

I'll say, we are extremely careful about safety as well, but with course workers with radios and flags, we're able to run cars in roughly 30-second intervals and have never (to my knowledge) had any kind of close calls on-course. I'd guess that some of our courses are at best 50% visible from the booth (some are totally visible with the booth on a hilltop).

My local SCCA region is having a rallycross in 2 weeks. I've never been to one, but it seems fun. None of my cars have really been appropriate, they are usually well lowered and don't have the ground clearance, are too nice, or are a truck that I would worry about rolling over.

Now, though, I have a car that has good ground clearance, lots of suspension travel, a roll cage and belts, and I don't worry much about it getting damaged. So, I think I'm going to Rallycross my Rolls Royce.

DO EEEET.

At our event this weekend there is a LeMons Miata coming out. Running in MR class, needless to say. Should be interesting. I dont' think we've had any miatas run locally, at least in the last couple seasons.

Most of the corners have cones, but the workers are pretty spread out. There are workers out on the back of the course and we typically use HAM to keep in touch, so I am not 100% sure why we can't run multiple cars.

By close calls do you mean wrecks or car on car incidents...

Car on car. Regular wrecks can happen no matter how many cars you have on course.

In reply to moxnix:

that's what i thought, just wanted to make sure, i was going to say that I was aware of quite a few non car to car incidents, but certainly no metal to metal contact at a rally-x out there
