Signed up to do the Nov 17th THSCC event at the Wilson County fairgrounds in my Saab 9-5.
All of my RallyX experience in the past was in an Impreza 2.5RS, this will be the first time RallyX'ing a FWD vehicle.
The Saab has stock craptastic all season tires, what is a good baseline psi to start? Its been about 6 years since I've done a RallyX but I seem to remember running the tires in the low 40psi range in the Subie.
40-45psi is generally a good range for non-rally tires.
In reply to Storz:
Is it possible to run negative psi? ;-)
My experience is to run the lowest pressure you can, but enough so that the tires won't de-bead. 10 psi/ 1000 pounds of car seems to be a good starting point.
Pump up the tires and have fun! I rallyx a wrx on bald street tires and picked up a 3rd place at the last event in stock awd.
In rallycross I have found it's more important to have confidence and reliability than to try to get an extra little bit of performance by running lower pressures. I don't think it's worth the risk of a debead. I run the highest pressure I can: the maximum listed on the sidewall. If your tires are slightly too hard you might be a little slower, but if you debead because you didn't put enough pressure in them, you're not going to win.
That said, what works for me on the surface I race on might not work for you. Out here in the wild west of California, we race on a loose, rocky, muddy surface that gets rutted easily. AT and gravel tires work best out here. If the surface you drive on is smooth and favors street tires or all-seasons, you might be able to run a lower pressure.
