Anybody have any actual, real experience with RE-71R tire life?

I know they're the fast tire out now but I've heard anywhere from 'it'll last all season' to 'wear almost as fast as hoosiers.' I'm assuming its heavily vehicle dependent.

For me: Stock 1.6 miata, HPDE use in case anybody cares :)

You've heard people say RE71Rs don't wear quickly? I've heard reports from "They wear fast for EPS tires" to "gone almost as fast as Hoosiers."

Two local guys I run with (swapped Honda civics) have been running them all year and think they'll be able to finish the season with them. I was surprised too.

I can't speak for track day type wear but my 4,000 pound 1990 Infiniti Q45 has been wearing the same pair since before Challenge $2015. Since then, 5,000 road miles, 8 autox days and a dozen or more passes down the drag strip. They seem to be at about half life.
I bought a set for my street driven 90 Miata too but these have seen less use.

I would buy again and recommend often, but not sure how fast you will wear them on a hot track day.

i got one full season with a set on a 2700lb fwd car. 10 local events (about 4 runs average per event, co-driven 3 events), one national match tour and nationals. Still had tread when I traded them off. Right around 80 runs total.I did flip them on the wheels after about 50 runs.

^ 10 autox events would be a whole lot less punishing than the ~20 or so DE days I have planned this year. Ack.

20 DE days - you're not getting through that on a single set of tires. Assuming you get 90 minutes of track time each day, you're talking about the equivalent of a 30 hour race.

I was at the track on Friday with some RE71Rs. They've mostly been on a stock-engined ND Miata and have seen something like 6 track days. It's hard to identify what a heat testing track session is compared to a track day We flipped them after the last day but they're still gripping well and have some life left.

We also run them on our V8 ND, but I think their short life there is due to other reasons.

Never said I expected a full season

I'm just wondering about who here on this board has run em. I've found lots of reviews like this one that are promising:

tire rack review said: Ran a set of these at the most recent 14 hour Laguna Seca race. The fronts barely made it 10 hours of racing(220 laps), the rears lasted 12(250 laps). Grip was on par with bigger 225mm tires but given the short lifespan, will not buy again.

10 hours is totally cool. 4 would not be.

We've definitely put more than 4 hours on our naturally aspirated car.

i did forget there was a 20 minute track session and about 2000 street miles on them as well

We run the RE71's on our Lemons 4 cyl mustang, after three races or about 45 hours of constant hot laps with iffy driver they are about toast. Not the R version so probably not any help.

With less drivers using them in stead of the brakes to scrub off speed we would probably get another race out of them.

In reply to Blaise:

They "might" make a full year like that. Depends on the sites/camber.

When occasionally street driven between events the re71s last MUCH longer.

C5Z06, Current set of re71s were bought August last year for Scca nationals.

They're at ~170 runs right now and still plenty of tread. If I wasn't going to Hoosiers they would be going to their second nationals. C for concrete A for asphalt

-Prosolo Nationals C - 12

-Nationals (codriver) C -12

-October localx2 A - 24

-6 locals 2017 6 each A- 36

-2017 local fun runs A - 8

-Blytheville pro(x2) C- 24

-Peru match (x2) C- 20

-Bristol champ (x2) A- 12

-bristol match (x2) A- 19

Rears haven't hit wear bars, fronts are close. Last set of RE71s lasted till nationals last year and we're bought by PO when the tires first came out in 2015. Other than the Bristol match the car has always throphied or won.

These will be doing the Toledo champ and finishing out my locals + a track day this year. I will likely order new ones at the beginning of next year.

Yes, it is heavily dependent on weight, temperature, and camber settings. On a light car that doesn't run on extremely hot days and can achieve good camber settings, they last OK, maybe 70-80% as long as a tire like the Star Spec or RS4.

On heavy camber-challenged cars that run on hot days, they can be toast after 50-80 runs on an autocross or one or two track days.

How much camber we talking? I'm not sure how extreme my miata can go with just ELBJs. I'm assuming... max?

I ran through a set on my 3,100# E36 in about 32 HPDE-style sessions on Summit Main. Two corded on the outside edge. Two out of four have some life left in them, but probably four or fewer sessions. Square set, rotated around to even out the edge wear. Around 3.5 degrees negative camber, driven like I stole them.

That was my front set after 70 autocross runs and about 4k of on-road use. On a 2700# FWD car.

BTW, they still had grip in the wet

In reply to Blaise:

~2600lb NC Miata, -2.5 Deg camber:

  • 20x AutoX runs
  • 4x Track night in America events (I don't push as much as I would in a DE)
  • 2x HPDE weekends
  • 6k transit miles

They're just about to the wear bars and they're probably gonna be replaced after my next DE weekend. I think I'm going with Azenis or RS4s next based on what I've heard from some Le Chump folks.

Thinking about running a set of these on the c5, might see an autocross or two but mainly the ocassional drag run and street driving, how are they on the street

I have a set on my FD, 4K street miles and the rears are half worn, fronts have a bit more left than that.

They're a bit noisy, but other than that I like them a lot as street tires.

To me, as long as it's 40 F ambient or warmer, there's no downside to them on the street compared to a UHP tire other than that they're noisy. They're as good in the rain as any UHP summer tire (assuming they still have some tread on them).
