I am working on getting a Land Rover Discovery running again after sitting for ~10 years. I had a remanufactured starter sitting around so with all the fluid changes I did I swapped this in as well. Upon initial startup attempt I noticed some smoke coming from the center console. When I investigated I noticed the e-brake cable that runs into the transfer case was white and red hot. Going under the truck I did not notice any bear wires, all look good. Break out the handy voltage meter and I am getting 7-8 volts at any point on the transmission or transfer case.
Could this be from the starter?
Could your battery ground be bad?
You are missing a ground between body, frame and engine somewhere.
Yup that's exactly what it was. Found a huge ground strap bolted to the frame and just hanging. Bolted the other end to the transmission housing and we're in business.
Now to swap out the fuel pump....
In reply to Kingkong :
Fuel pump might be working now that the frame is grounded properly.
Common issue on GM vans, the fuel pump grounds to the frame but the battery grounds to the engine and the cab. When the ground strap from the engine to the frame disintegrates, the fuel pump quits.
That's good info but don't have any pressure at the rail or hear it come on. Didn't get around to swapping it yet though.
