They drip? Seriously?  The old man had 4-5 ancient, man powered guns. Never dripped, unless you left a giant glob on the end when you hung it up on the clasp.

I always pull the handle back out and lock it on to the back of the canister to take the spring pressure off the grease.  No pressure on the grease = no leaks.  I hang them on nails in my shed. Never had a leaking problem.  

I have a small toolbox dedicated to it, with the spare grease tubes

Maybe it depends on the grease, but recently loaded mine with valvoline synthetic grease (red stuff) and it has "melted" out of the guns that were hanging upright.  The old school US made grease gun and the chinesium Tractor Supply grease gun both leaked. It has been very hot lately and garage is uninsulated, so heat might be a factor with less heavy grease.
