I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I really hope this wasn't verbatim from GMs press release:
GM said in a statement. If a pad is missing, the dealer will install a new one, and if necessary, a new brake caliber or rotor
A Dodge Caliber?

It's straight out of Shop Class as Soulcraft. The author's viewpoint is assembly line work does not allow ownership of the entire product by the worker and treats the worker as a very small cog in the machine. Thus, no commitment to quality despite of all management's efforts to the contrary. now, the worker should be taking pride in his small part, no? would this same worker make an excellent craftsman? If given a chance, maybe.
The flip side is vehicles produced by local craftsmen would easily be triple the price. But ya probably would only buy one every twenty years or so.
Of course, I am posting on the intarweb from my armchair of wisdom.
