Yeah, machine work will be happening. At the very least, just to clean everything up.
I'm rebuilding because the motor has 190k unopened miles on it. The car has never really been taken care of, and it's been making much more power than stock for the better part of a decade.
Seems to run ok otherwise at the moment, so i've got some time, which lets me plan everything out and save to do it all right.
The plan is to just pull the motor this summer and clean up what i can, fix the leaks, and hope it holds long enough for the Challenge, then dump in new motor when i come back.
There's room in the budget to get a stock rockauto bottom end rebuild in the car, but i'd rather have that money aside for incidentals.

Something tells me that the Mazda main bearings are going to be better than any of the aftermarket ones.

I compression tested the motor today.
Nominal for my motor is 139psi, lowest acceptable according to FSM is 98psi.
My old 190k 22 year old motor pulled some pretty incredible numbers. I'm not rebuilding this thing, it obviously leads a charmed life.
Cylinder #1: 150psi
Cylinder #2: 151psi
Cylinder #3: 150psi
Cylinder #4: 148psi
I'm guessing the head that's on it right now has been decked, but even so, i'm pretty ecstatic about those numbers otherwise.

I guess now all i have left to do is to boost the everliving piss out of it and watch it cackle with glee.
