$6k or below, sub $5k would be great
previous car was the cleanest AW11 I'd seen in the last decade and he previously had a 2002
He isn't a fan of the answer (already tried)
Is currently leaning towards a 944S
RWD is a plus, but not mandatory. Manual transmission is.

It wouldn't be a true GRM what car thread if someone didn't disregard at least one listed requirement.

Yeah... the auto part. But it's a Typhoon. I think that transcends the need for a manual.
E36s, 944s, TDI VWs, GTIs are currently on the list to check out, I removed WRXs from his list and added
MR-Ss. I couldn't get duratec focus ZX3s onto the list, but BG chassis mazdas strangely aren't completely off of it.
Early 5-speed Boxster, daily driver, $5,900

E30 or a mid to late 80s C4 Corvette.
MR-S? If he didn't like the Miata I can't see him liking one of those.
He needs more money that way I could recommend the FR-S/BRZ or the S2000.
Wait... You want GRM to talk someone out of a cheap Porsche from the eighties?

As attested to in various threads lately, E46 values are at rock bottom right now. Find the nicest 330i (coupe or sedan as required) with a manual transmission that's within the budget. Bonus points if it has at least the Sport package (ZSP) which has way better seats than the base cars. At this point all the other advantages (mostly suspension bits) have largely aged out and will need replacement, so don't make the package configuration a deal breaker.

I like the C4 idea. Look good at a nice ride height with some nice ZR1 wheels. The only thing to worry about is on the C4 some parts are no longer available and have to be found used or remaned. So tell him to by the cleanest most well cared for example he can.
I wouldnt buy a fixer C4. Lots of stuff is really reasonable and them WAM some random part is a fortune.
I even like the early ugly ones, the later ones are even prettier.
When I was looking for a C5 I found a clean Gran Sport for 6500. Those are the most valuable normal, non ZR-1, C4, so I bet most others could be found for under 6. C4 pricing is very strange. One one hand its an unloved car by the majority of the population, on the other hand its a vette, plus C5 prices are super low right now, and you have a huge performance difference between early and late c4s. So youll find prices all over the place. Clean early cars for 8-9K, and beat up ones like 5 or 6K. You have to find someone who is serious about selling, didnt get hosed when they purchased, and actually understand what the cars are worth.
I see more crazy prices than I do realistic ones, but good C4 deals are out there.
'86 CRX Si?
On a more serious note, I'm beginning to find the $5k 944s to be in a dangerous place. You can get lucky and find a good 'un, but a lot of them are suffering from neglect.
