I was flipping through the Reader's Rides and came across the Taurus SHO
Remember when this guy was bad?
220 HP and an intake that would make an octopus jealous.
Now if you have a V6 with less than 250 hp your laughed at. I remember when that was big numbers for a V8
Long live HP!!!!

My 91 SHO was one of the best cars I've ever owned.
91 SHO here too. Can't say it was one of the best, but it was crazy fun. I'd own another some day.
I like the idea of putting that engine in something else like an XR4Ti or Capri, that sort of thing.
I have a nice example of one of these in my shed just waiting for a light weight home. Probably never to be...

I had not thought of an xr4ti. Hmm....
Damn this place... off to car-part to look for one to daydream install in a 3.0 Ranger....
All I remember is stories of them blowing up
That seems unlikely. The transmissions were E36 M3 but the engine were bulletproof.

Remember when a mid- to full-size sedan weight about 3200 pounds? Now if your Taurus is anything less than 4200 lbs you're laughed at. I remember when that was big numbers for a Crown Vic.
Long live Lbs!!!
I seem to recall the 220 hp number as being extremely suspect--that is to say, somewhat understated.
I am now currently looking for a merkur (xr or scorpio) to drop my SHO motor into. Probably make an adapter for a Toyota w58 cause I have one.
I've seen a few wagon swaps. That looks nice.

I don't think that means what you think it means!!!!
LOL
A group of guys showed up at the Calgary Chumpcar race in an SHO swapped Windstar...It blew up, but they had it stripped down to fighting weight. I think maybe they needed to add a bit of weight in the form of cooling system.
I had a 92. It was a great car. The engine was awesome. I tried to keep wheelspin to a minimum, but I think alot of full throttle second and third gear work was hard on it. The differential broke a spider gear and shrapnel ensued. Waterford Hills had a Ranger with that engine and a five speed for an utility truck. As I recall it had an Aerostar bellhousing.
Yeah there is a really difficult to find aerostar bell housing that bolts this motor to a t5. I have tried a few times to find said housing with no luck.
great motor in search of a better car. Mustang II might be interesting.
I had visions of a SHO engined Scorpio. Some accused me of nibbling on cactus or fungus when I had those visions.

i know of a few of them that burnt to the ground after a fuel line or something ruptured in the engine bay.. i don't know if it was just an SHO problem, but i've never seen a regular Taurus that did it the same way..
i'm trying to put one in my $100 Ranger right now. I'll keep ya'll posted, honest.

My '92 SHO was great with the manual transmission. Well, the engine was great. The rest of the car was total E36 M3.
I had a 92. Loved it until I realized it was cursed by a witch doctor, head-shrinker, Beetlejuice, and was built on an Indian burial ground.
The engine was great, but my trans grenanded, twice.
I find it deliciously ironic that the picture in question is in a junkyard with the plugs pulled out
pilotbraden:
The Scorpio was available in Europe with a DOHC V6...somewhat like today's Ranger engine, but you probably already knew that.
I know of a car that would be an "interesting" home for an SHO engine, it's near me and for sale...but for $2500. Car is a 4 door, Fox-bodied, Granada. It would take the thinly veiled sleeper aspect of the SHO even further.
The 99 cobra had 320 HP and was amazing, now your at that with a v6.
When i got my 06 MazdaSPEED 6 i was hot stuff with 274HP, now the Hyundai Genesis base V6 has ~330, BTW thats the same as the last gen M3...
The ITG-R has 195HP, now a civic SI bests that
It's pretty absurd now days and i wonder when the HP wars will end, rather than having a 330 Hyundai could we have a 200 HP hyundai (its a family car cmon) that got 30% better MPG...? They would still make the Type r or what ever the new one is called ofc.
