The exhaust on my V8 S10 project passes very close to the oil filter. I was planning on putting in a remote oil filter kit after the challenge is over, but was thinking I might be able to get one in on the challenge budget. Anyone have any low budget suggestions for a kit to do this for a typical small block chevy? I'd rather get it all in one set, rather than cobbling something together.
I have used an ebay kit a few times. Ill see if i can find it again
And while im at it, fund a good cheap one for the miata. That filter is a giant pain in the ass.
Don't worry about it. It's a non issue.
Hell, there were some year Pontiacs where the exhaust passed so close to the oil filter that you had to remove the exhaust to do an oil change.
See also: all the final series nonturbo EJ25 engines where the oil filter was hand-burningly surrounded on all sides by the exhaust manifolding.
I think there's maybe 1/4"-1/2" between the exhaust and the filter. There's also only about 1/8"-1/4" from the LCA mount on the other side of the exhaust, so not really any room to shift it farther away. That just seems to close for comfort for me, at least in the long term.
Meh.
If you have a small block Chevy, 50% of the oil heat comes from the horribly inefficient oil pump, anyway. I wouldn't worry too hard about it.
I had a sbc where the exhaust would self clearance the oil filter once. Didn't seem to care.
I also can't find the cheap Chinese relocation kit ive used. Only the transdapt and such. Sorry.

Junkyard 4.3 S-Blazer 4x4 bits? I think the 4.3 uses the same filter mount as an SBC... maybe?
The 4x4 Blazer uses a remote setup? Did not realize that. I'll check next time I hit a junkyard. Although, it sounds like I don't have too much to worry about at least for the challenge.
4x4, 4.3 only. First gen guaranteed. Im fairly certain the second gen did as well, at least in the early years.
The hoses and filter mount may still be available new, for the 95-up Blazers. The hoses were a regular maintenance item and the filter mounts corroded away from their mounting holes with such regularity that we always replaced them as a set. These were the ones with the filter mounted under the radiator, with a little access flap in the undertray.
I have a completely disassembled 4.3 4x4 s10 chassis and drive train I was given by a coworker. I'll check to see if it has any remote filter stuff tomorrow, and if it does it's yours for shipping.
I changed the oil on a late (02ish) 4x4 4.3 blazer a while ago and it had the factory remote setup.
That said, if you aren't burning the paint off the filter I wouldn't worry about it.
+1 for not worrying about it. Plenty of small Japanese engines have the oil filter nestled among the exhaust header tubes to no ill effects.
If you do it, do yourself a favor and don't mount the filter upside down - needlessly makes filter changes mess-city
Every 4wd 4.3 s10 as far as I know used a remote filter because the front driveshaft lives where the filter is supposed to be. Not sure it's worth the logistical headache but I have the full remote filter and cooler line mess from the Bravada still.
I had a 2000 GMC Sonoma "Highrider" the equal of the Chevy ZR2. It had a remote oil filter from the factory. It did leak under warranty, was replaced then OK.
The 4.3 S10/Sonoma 4x4's also list a longer oil filter as well - FYI. It also fits the 2.2 Cavalier/Sunfire. Same thread, about twice as long.

I was just looking at the back of my right arm where I burned myself on a Sentra's exhaust manifold trying to get the oil filter.
I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you're doing it for convenience's sake. Then go for it.
I think I'll hold off for now on a remote filter, then maybe after the challenge, I'll consider it, but there will probably be other higher priority changes beforehand.
It doesn't cost anything to spec a different filter too, for more clearance. On my Opels there is a clearance problem with some of the ac brackets and the skid plate using the recommended filter. Half an hour with the paper copy of the filter book at Napa revealed half a dozen different part numbers with the same threads, sealing gasket, pressure rating, drainback valve, and bypasses, with three narrower body diameters and 4" worth of different lengths. Sure the filter from a lawn mower may not offer a lot of filter media but if all the specs are right and it's got 3/4" of clearance all around maybe you just change it more often or use synthetic oil.
I did find the filter mount from the s10, but not the block adapter or hoses.
