Hi all, anyone have any tips or tricks for removing the chrome from steel wheels?  I want to remove the chrome then be able to prime and paint them.

Thanks

Paul

Chrome doesn't come off easily. I've heard that you can have a chrome shop remove the plating in the tank.  Other than that I think you could try to sandblast the chrome off, It's going to take a while.

I've used Muriatic Acid to de-chrome small things.  You'll need to neutralize the acid after. And you'll want to be upwind of it all, too.

I narrowed a bumper on a Malibu once.  I peckered up the chrome with media blasting, primed it with Eastwood Adhereto and then painted it body color.

Can't speak for wheels.

I think this is the way to go. Chrome wheels you're ok with stripping might not be worth the cost of actually stripping them.

A few days in a vinegar bath should do it.
