On my way home from the track the other day I noticed that there was a bit of vibration coming through the steering wheel. I took it as the tell tale sign that my tires had picked up some clag on my cool down lap. This morning I put the street pads back on the car and sure enough there were a couple big patches of clag stuck to the front tires. One patch was at least 2" x 3" and roughly 3/16" thick. I tried using a gasket scraper big it was hard to keep it from digging into the tire itself. Then I remembered that I had a spokeshave that I inherited from my grandfather. I rolled the tire up against my workbench, held the shave at a 45 degree angle and carefully shaved off the chunks of rubber.
One of the smaller bits of clag.
Hold the shave at a 45 degree angle and push AWAY from yourself.
All done.
Oscillating multitool, sometimes I forget they have uses other than rubber buildup removal.
Alternativelyt, if you notice it when the tire/rubber are hot (like right after coming off track) you can usually just peel it off by hand.
I have used a curry comb for this in the past.

I used a heat gun and painter's tool with good results.
I didn't think about heating it up. I'll have to try that next time.

How about an old fashioned burnout?
With my A052's I just leave it on and it all scrubs off after a few hot laps.

It's a new one to me. I've always heard it referred to as OPR, or other people's rubber.

Those bloody F1 tea-sippers call them marbles, but it's clag here in freedom land.
I've never had any that didn't just come off when driving normally. It's pretty cool that they make street tires that'll pick that stuff up now.

I cleaned up the rear tires using this method this afternoon. It works really well.

David Hobbs used it on the F1 broadcasts all of the time.

NASCAR calls them marbles too.
At my first and only AX nationals, I had the lofty job of spraying the circle where people would scrub off OPR. Doing a couple of loops on a really wet surface seemed to clean most of the junk off that was picked up during a run. Not sure how well this works once the OPR is baked into the tire though.
Strictly speaking that's a drawknife, not a spokeshave.

Never heard that term. Still going to call them marbles but kind of cool.
I recently learned that tight loops around a cul-de-sac won't really remove clag.
In reply to dannyzabolotny :
Same here, never had an issue just burning it off from driving.
Things one shouldn't admit; when I tracked a street car, the first on ramp usually cleaned off the tires

I would say more on the track, yes.

Gotta get some pics of the tires we got from an autocrosser moving away from 13" wheels on his Miata. They have asphalt stuck to them. Big sheets of asphalt, across most of the width.
It's an Ohio Valley region thing. One of the lots they (used to?) use was bad for that.
