WD-40 does work well for removing the goo, had to remove and update a license plate registration sticker with only common household chemicals a while ago. Alcohol for cleanup/prep, again it worked well.

Removed a lot of vinyl off my truck, after fighting the glue on one side with acetone, Rapid Remover was suggested. ITS AMAZING. Did the whole other side in half the time....
Its designed for vinyl, but I cant imagine the glues are much different?
