Well I went and bought a briggs and straton 16hp engine for cheap, guy said it ran, I don't know how it could run given the amount of gas that run through the carb onto the ground. Well I took the carb apart before researching how to pull it apart and I damaged the float and the main jet which goes between the top and bottom got bent. I tried removing the jet and apparently you are suppossed to use a special screw driver so the main jet stripped. Well I ended up trying to easyout the main jet and it did not work that sucker is in there.

Any tips or suggestions on how to get this thing out, this is turning into a mess, and I'd prefer to not have to drill the jet out and either helicoil or retap the hole. What a stupid design.

Thanks for any tips folks!

If that's the carb, I would take the easy route and just replace the whole thing.

Thanks Derick might end up going that route. Got most of the jet out, but apparently instead of removing the thin remnants of the jet the tap tore into the carb body. Think I might try to either knurl or peen the threads and try to retap, whoever intstalled the jet must have really put the damn thing in there. I'll figure something out, as long as the main jet seats and I have some threads to screw in the needle I'll figure something out.

I was thinking about getting a thin brass sleeve then epoxying that into the carb body and rettapping 5/16 32. Haven't had anything fight me like this lately.

If it is like the one pictured, the main jet is removed with a hex wrench when you remove the float bowl.

Well I got the main jet out and even have enough threads to thread it in but the needle holder threads near the top are gone. Thing I'm going to use vestible bearing and see if I can get the needle holder so seat. If both the main jet and needle jet seat to hell with it I'm calling it done and finish rebuilding the carb.

The carb I have is different than the one pictured, it is an updraft carb and the main jet goes through the carb body into the upper carb body. Before you break the carb upper and lower parts you have to remove the main jet or you will bend it like beckham. The float in my carb is actually between the two parts of the carb body not really in a float bowl as pictured.

Thanks for the help and suggestions haven't had anything go to hell like this in awhile.

Can you take a picture of it and post it? I'm sure it can't be terribly expensive to buy one that's been rebuilt. My ass has been handed to me way too many times with small carb rebuilds now that there's a good amount of ethanol in our fuel. It's really only an issue with neglected carbs, but most small engines I work on have been really put through the wringer.

Weasel Piss and a little heat; hair dryer heat, not torch heat.

Would have been nice if the carb main jet would have come out nicely but it had a real bad attitude. I almost think the brass fused to the pot metal body, I used a heat gun on the jet also. The easy out only dug into the brass, it didn't bite. If I was to redo it I would either bring the carb to a shop or just drill it out to begin with. If you don't get a good plumb hole the first time drill isn't going to work to well.

I'll get some picks up later this really is a hell of a carb design. I'm blaming all my problems on ethanol not the fact the engine sat outside for 5 years, every piece of rubber is like a rock.

Thanks folks, if I ever have a stuck jet again I'll bring it to my local motorcycle shop and let them fight it.

Lets see if this works, the brass thing is the main jet, you can see how it goes into the upper float body.
