I have some class numbers fro rallycross on the side of my car. The numbers are vinyl which are applied to a vinyl "meatball" applied to the car. I want to take the numbers and class off without damaging the meatball so I can put magnetic numbers on for next season. Is there a good way to remove the top layer without damaging the vinyl underneath? Low heat and careful peeling?

I would start with low heat and a soft scraper (or finger nail). Once you get a corner lifted, the rest should peel off well. Probably need a little goof-off or similiar to get residue off meatball.
Will the goof-off damage the surface of the vinyl?
Shouldnt do any damage. I would use just a fingernail, no scrapers or heat.
If you use heat you risk lifting the meatball as well.

If anything, just let it sit in the afternoon sun for a couple hours. Should be more than enough warmth to soften up the vinyl.
We've never had that kind of thing go well in our sign shop, but then again we aren't emotionally invested in it either.
good luck. If worse comes to worse, new white vinyl circles should be about the cheapest decal you can buy. Start with new ones for less than $25, probably.
i would face the car towards the sun one side at a time half hr black will suck in the heat and do a test remove smaller letter first and do the passenger side so if you do screw it up you dont have to look at it every time u get in
