Depends on the size of said adults, but I'd lean towards 'no'. Four adults in total, yes, five, not so much.
BTW, where are they planning to go? If they're staying in major towns they don't want a rental car, much like you wouldn't want one in SF.
My dad is from England and they have been a number of times so I am assuming they know if they need it or not.
Is there a Euro sedan / rental car that could fit 3 U.S. sized adults in the back seat? I can't think of any.
Mercedes S-class?
Last time I was there, the guy I held the door for walking into the rental place took the last focus and I ended up with a Renault scenic. It was dog slow, the wipers went the wrong way, but it could have fit 5 adults and their stuff in sorta comfort. It was, however, far more responsive and engaging to drive than 90% of us produced non-sports cars.
