So, my offspring ran over something in the road (don't know what) resulting in a blown front tire and a hole in the gas tank (2016 Toyota Rav4).  The car was towed to the dealer.  I can get a salvage yard gas tank put in or I can get a new tank for $500 more.  What's the downside to the salvage gas tank?  I'm guessing rust and crud in the tank that shakes loose when it's removed could lead to plugged fuel filter / fuel pump and further trouble but I'm not sure.  Should I spend the extra for the new tank?

New one on Rockauto is under $300

I would have no problem with a used Toyota OEM gas tank for a 2016 car. It's probably a lot better than the new aftermarket ones available. I don't imagine there's any rust or crud in the tank in a 2016!

Yeah, I wouldn't expect much crud in there either but I'll admit I haven't looked into many new(ish) gas tanks.  That was about the only thing I could think of as a downside to a used tank.  I suppose that there may be older RAV4s of that generation that could donate a tank (not sure when that generation started) but still they shouldn't be more than another couple of years older.  I just wanted to see if that was what other people expected and to see if anyone knew of any other potential issues.  Thanks.

How much is the used tank?  At $270 plus shipping, I'd probably opt for the new one from Rockauto.

Used is $170 and new OEM from Toyota is $650.  I'm having the dealer do this so I don't know that an aftermarket piece from Rockauto is an option.

Got it.

2016 is new enough to be most likely fine, and if the dealer is doing the work, I'd say you are correct.  Price seems reasonable.  Good luck!
