My daily driver is an F-250 Powerstroke, with a Reading steel contractor utility cap on it.

Looks like standard work truck stuff- you pass something similar every day. It's got a couple of ladders on top, and tools, etc. inside, but it does not look overly laden, sits straight, doesn't squat.

I knew it was heavy, because it don't drive like my Rabbit.

But today I had the chance to take it across a scale. It was loaded as I drive it regularly, not loaded down like I occasionally do, nor towing a trailer like I do quite frequently.

In standard daily trim, it tipped the scales at 8200#.

That's over 5 times the weight of my Rabbit.

Gives me a whole new perspective on the engineering challenges of what I drive, and a great deal of respect (fear) for all those other work trucks I see out there.

Even with over 4 tons on board, I still get over 20 mpg regularly. Gotta love a diesel.

Thats outstanding fuel mileage! My previous work truck was a Sprinter. Its every day weight was very close to yours, and it just barely made 21mpg.

I usually get about 22 mpg. Drops as low as 18 mpg when towing.

It's chipped, but that's the only mod. Still running stock exhaust.

We weighed my father's '69 Bonneville wagon in normal load out, with the rear jumpseats removed and the resulting secret compartment full of the usual tools and spare car wash parts.

5800 pounds.

You haven't seen loaded until you meet a scrapper with a loaded 1/2 ton.

My 2002 2500HD with an open trailer, an 89 Civic, some tools, spares, and luggage, crossed the scales at 14,000#. I was stunned.

How about towing across the country with a regular cab, long box duramax 2500hd... total rig weight, 22,000 pounds

Worst experience ever, so uncomfortable it's mind boggling. And then recce'ing with said truck.

At 14k, it was a dream. Comfy, had plenty of balls left, may have accidentally seen triple digits, etc....

The empty kerb weight of my truck is 4894#.

I've towed lots of heavy loads (20K +), but I was pretty surprised to realize that I was hauling regularly so much "before loading" in tools, etc.

About the same as mine. 79 GMC C3500 Dually regular cab, small block, SM465 trans, Dana 70 HD rear (2WD), it weights 5500 lbs, empty, GVWR is 10,000 lbs.

I need to weight my truck and trailer sometime, curious to see what it weights. I estimate it is around 14K.

I don't think my truck has ever seen triple digits even empty. But with low gears and without overdrive that is to be expected. It may fly apart at that speed for all I know.

I gained a totally new respect for towing when I took my parts car to the scrapyard and found that my van + trailer + car was almost 10,000 pounds. Figure in some extra tires, tools, fuel, and other sundry items, and I'm sure that when I'm towing to a rallycross I've got 5 tons to keep out of other people's trunks...

8200lbs is around stock weight for that truck from the specs I'm seeing online.

10,000 lbs you for your truck eh...

thats cute, this is what I deal with at work.

80k-100k

:P

except right now there are a lot of these because their full power brake system is garbage.

(couldn't resist to troll, sorry)

Yep, fidelity, your trucks are bigger. No CDL, special tags or DOT issues (well for the most part) with our trucks. Not to mention my neighbors wouldn't be happy with a Class 8 truck parked at my house.

I think my F250 oil burner crewcab long box weighs in empty around 7,900. I can cruise around getting 20-21 mpg all day. Even towing the 28' goosneck with the horse we averaged 16 mpg after sitting in traffic in CT and again in NY.

It's amazing how well these things hide their weight.

My mother-in-law's husband drives the nastiest hazmat he can find for a living and he was pretty un-impressed, too. :)

He says the really crazy guys are the tandem trailer drivers, though.

Our 06 1/2 crewcab is 5100lbs empty. This year's tow to lincoln with the STC Civic, trailer, tires, tools people, coolers etc was just shy of 10k lbs on a 4.8L V8. We averaged a tick over 15mpg round trip and it was an easy tow.

I wish it could "accidentally" see triple digits, but the nanny-on-board limits the top speed to 96mph.

Yeah I don't drive them, I work for the people who make the components that make class 8 vehicles. I have a hard time backing up my 20' car hauler with my 85 suburban granny 4 speed lol.

Driven by crazies, repaired by morons.
