I need to service the air filters on my Guzzi. They're reusable pods, K&N I think.
Im feeling cheap and I would like to do this with household items. Im thinking simple green to clean them and maybe motor oil or cooking oil after that?
Google is surprisingly not helpful this morning. Someone here has done this right?
I think you need a pretty sticky oil so it doesn't get sucked into the cylinder too easily amd stuff actually sticks to it...

My limited experience with K&N washable A filters is that they work best when you use K&N F oil (just don't over oil them).

I'm like 90% sure the cleaner is just simple green, but I would use the right oil. And yeah, for $10 I'd just buy the kit.
The cleaner smells exactly like Spray Nine and seems to work the same.
You can buy a huge spray can of filter oil for a lot less than a "recharger" kit costs, too. Many re-oils in a 12-14oz can.

I have a bunch of these in use. I use the purple degreaser initially then no-toil in a spray can after that for soap and water cleanup
K&N rep told me to avoid simple green as it can bleach and weaken the fibers. He said best substitute for the K&N stuff is dish soap.
Another reason for Spray Nine
I think I am on the same can of Klotz oil that I bought about four or five years ago. I have a couple filters that I rotate and swap a fresh filter on after every rallycross, and throw the filters away after five or six cleanings because they do degrade over time. Or a throttle cable rubs a hole in one and I don't notice it until after dust ingestion destroys an engine. (Oops)
