ALWAYS use a new head gasket, save yourself a possible headache in the future. Head gasket is designed to be crushed and seal. It's already been crushed, so the sealing part is compromised If this is a challenge car, reuse it. otherwise, no.
Will probably work... for the 20 some bucks for a y8 though.. I'd just buy a new one. (or are they more expensive... i'm bit rusty on oem mls gaskets)
And for some reason I keep looking at that 60 ft-lbs and it seems low? Granted... I haven't built a D for like 5-6yrs....
I would never re-use a head gasket, but I guess it depends where you are on your own personal Time vs. Money continuum.
I've gotten away with reusing head gaskets many times over the years. Never a recommended practice, and really not worth the few dollars it saves me. But none the less, I've gotten away with it.
That's only when the head gasket came out looking pristine, or nearly so.
I don't like the idea of reusing a multilayer steel HG either, since any 'beading' is already crushed. Once or twice I've reused the old composite gaskets (asbestos and steel fire rings) but I have probably just been lucky.
yea.. and it is usually a pig of a job to do the first time.. who wants to do it a second over a cheap part that should have been replaced in the first place?
I made the stupid mistake of putting a 2.0 DOHC Neon HG on upside down, and once I realized what I'd done, flipped it immediately after only running it a minute.

I'd reuse an MLS before (attempting to) reuse a graphite gasket.
In fact, I have reused MLS head gaskets. Clean with denatured alcohol, spray with Copper-Kote, install.
While it may depend on the gasket, the MLS gasket that was in the motor that I ran in my shadow was used three times. It held fine at 34 psi of boost and a 50 shot of nitrous to push the car to a 10.57 @ 135 mph it's last time out. Both times I reused it, I cleaned the hell out of it, inspected it for any damage and hit it with a generous coat of copper spray.
A graphite gasket, I wouldn't consider using. An MLS...if in a pinch, it's likely to be fine.
