I have run into a problem with my 1967 Bug Project ( it's in my garage here ) I figured out awhile back that it came wearing early 924 wheels. I made a tactical error in thinking they were a standard VW 4 bolt 4x130 pattern and somewhere along the line someone had converted from 1967 5 lug to the later 4 lug pattern. I was wrong, many of you already know where this is headed, 924 wheels are 4x108 and thats the problem. I have two stripped out lug holes on one of the front hub/drums. I have been unable to locate any replacements in 4x108. What say you Drill and helicoil the two bad holes? Try to locate undrilled front drums and have them custom drilled? I have been thus far unsuccessful in figuring out what car these drums may have come from or where to get new ones that don't cost a fortune to have custom drilled.

CIP1 or just about any other mail order ACVW parts house can get blank rotors. Have them drilled and then get some nice long pressed in studs while your at it. That's how I'll get 4x100 on my '67 Ghia.

Thus far the custom drum blank drilled to fit is the only option. It's a shame that they charge 120 some dollars to do the drilling and that doesn't cover the cost of the drums.

What size are the holes?

If they're 12mmx1.5 thread, I have repaired a stripped hole by tapping out to 14x1.5. I believe I tapped to 1/2-20 as an intermediate step out of paranoid worry about losing the hole's center. Worked fine.

VW lug bolts are all 14x1.5 now, so it was easy to find a replacement bolt.

Another option is to drill it out to the knurl size for pressed-in studs, although you may have to have the backside spot-faced.

Don't like this idea at all.

When you are cornering hard, you have an enormous amount of force on those lugs. 50% of your lugs are bad on one side.

Maybe some guys trust helicoils more than me.

$120 is a pretty cheap insurance policy, if that's the worst case scenario.

Are they standard 924 drums? Any part numbers on the edge of the drums?

If so, I'll send you the rear drums off of mine.

After a bit more research I have concluded that if I have to buy custom drilled brake parts I will probably save up a little and buy a custom drilled disc brake conversion for the front. It seems the best over all choice. I am going to continue looking for possible drum cantidates but will most likely just bite the bullet on disc set up.

In response to your generous offer, looking at pics of 924 rear drums I doubt they would work on the front of the bug as they are splinned for the axles. Sucks becuase they are readily available. Thanks anyway.

Just a quick note . . .

When/if you buy the disk brake conversion kit, you might want to stay away from the additional dropped spindle up-grade that often accompanies the ad/offer/listing unless you're sure that the lower ball joint (in the lowered position) will clear your rims.

You may not even be considering lowered spindles as part of the conversion, but thought it worth mentioning just in case. I ran into problems when I did the conversion on the VW.

Luck,

TC

Good to note, I am pretty sure the bug came already sporting a drop in the front but I will definately look before ordering just to be sure if I go the lowered rhoute.
