I didn't go because I don't have space for anything. This guy was the real deal, and I had no idea he lived so close.

Kind of disturbing that they're seemingly selling off every damn thing the guy owned. Seems like his family should be keeping some of this stuff:

In reply to GameboyRMH :

Possible that he didn't leave anyone behind?  Or there was something that happened between his family that left them not interested?

You'd be shocked. I had an employee that left behind a bunch of really important seeming personal stuff and I couldn't even get a return call. Talking photos from nearly 100 years ago, etc.

Sometimes a family does not want to deal with all the material things and all involved decide to bring in an auction house and turn it in to cash.

The 560 looks really nice!!!

If it makes you feel any better, I felt the same way. I received the link mid-day Sunday while in the middle of a floor tile job. If I'd been notified on Friday, I'd probably go and see if I could pick up some memento/tool of some sort.

Regarding the comments about them selling off all the stuff, we'll never know. The family may have picked out a few photos important to them and just wanted to monetize the rest of it. I've seen much the same thing happen when a retired machinist passes away, and the family just sells everything, most likely because they don't understand any of it - or need the money.

I had one rich relative.  When he passed his immediate family sold off all the cool valuable assets, put their mom in a home and proceeded to squander every penny.  It's pretty normal nowadays.

If it makes you feel any better, it's not a "nowadays" thing.  It's been happening a looonnnggg time.

Dean1484 is probably right. When looking for more info about Mr Hedrich I saw a nice post to a land speed record site from the son-in-law announcing his passing.

Cool dude.

As for the family selling everything, I can just about guarantee that if there was anything they really wanted, they already distributed it.

Think about if this was your family member that had passed. Some nice kitchen stuff, sure. I already have all of it though. I've always wanted a forklift! I have no place that I could store it and I'm not certified. Yeah, I'd love just about every vehicle there... But I don't have time for a project and already have a daily and already have [use of] a truck. Hey, why are they selling probably 30% of his trophies? Do you mean the the trophies he kept in the shop that you don't have a spot to display? Or the clothes that are 50 years out of style? I already have 2 outdated and no longer certified helmets, why do I need another?

I don't find it disturbing at all. When my grandparents passed/moved out, we had an estate sale for them. There was a lot of stuff that people wanted, but it wasn't worth the hassle. Sure, I'd have loved to keep grandpa's leather jacket that he always wore, but it was too small for me. Why do I want a leather jacket hanging in the closet that I'll literally never wear?
