I've got a 9 hr road trip from MI to DE this weekend. It got me wondering, what are the best road trip snacks and drinks that are relatively healthy and won't put you to sleep?

healthy?

Man, I still haven't forgiven Pringles for changing the can so you can't hold the lid on the bottom anymore.

Hmm... healthy... and road-trip worthy (not messy)... tall order...

bananas gatorade (healthier than soda, but close-able container) fruit/nut/granola mixes water in bottles (store bought or DIY)

Twizzlers, Jerky, and a big jug of homemade iced tea (really strong and unsweetened) have passenger pour into travel mug or fill lots o re-usable waterbottles at home if going solo

I don't know about healthy but a road trip often starts with

and a case of Diet Pepsi.
If nothing else if you get caught speeding hold up the empty crave case for a police escort to the nearest rest area

On long roadtrips I usually grab one of those pre-cut fruit containers from the grocery store. Eat with a toothpick if you don't want to get you hands messy. I also munch on granola bars. I tend to drink bottled water, unless I'm sleepy and I'll go for the Red Bull. I can't do fast food anymore.......that stuff makes me feel poisoned.

im a big fan of peanuts on road trips. Lots and lots of Trident gum (not really a snack per se, but hey it cleans your teeth!) apple/bananna/other assorted fruits

Carbs make you sleepy, sugar gives a rush then a crash. Caffeine makes for more rest stops. Some fruit rinds/peels smell up the car long after they've been eaten.

I like home-made jerky (less salt), nuts, water.

Oh, and the occasional bag of jalapeno potato chips and a Diet Mountain Dew. Rules are made to be broken.

I generally carry about four PB+J's. Keeps the energy up without losing valuable time stopping for food.

And red grapes. Clean and healthy.

I like to get snacks that are a pain in the ass to eat. If I'm getting sleepy at the wheel, eating a package of Starbursts is guaranteed to keep me awake for at least another half hour until I can get to the next place to stop and wake myself up again. I can't believe that with all of today's technology, those things still come individually wrapped inside the bigger package. Very fiddly.

Apples are about the only food I've ever eaten in my car. The great thing about apples is after you are done you can throw the core at a roadsign!

I remember one of the magazines (R&T?, C&D?) did a cross country trip with catheter's and power drinks and maybe a Jetta? The driver passed out?

IV coffee.

Put a warm wet washcloth in a zip lock bag.

Paper napkins can only do so much.

1 diesel jetta, 1 ~200gal tank that encompassed the entire trunk, no back seat, and a 6" pvc contraption that they could pee into as a urinal (no catheters).... (and an all fluid diet for those 8 days or whatever it was they stayed in there for...)

I think they ended up bailing early, but they did hit all 48 continental united states!

I always have at least one bag of sunflower seeds still in the shell. I am a coffee drinker and I have found there is nothing better (that is legal) to keep me awake while driving. If you lok like a chipmunk you are doing it right.

BJ's sells a trail mix that is peanuts, raisins and M&M's. That works pretty well.

Water and sugar free Red Bull are helpful, too.

However, on a long road trip, I'll pull over and eat something just to get out of the car for a bit. I also tend not to drink too much because I hate having to pee every hour.

My wife negates most "minimal stops" plans, though.
