Robby finished 3rd today and is second overall. Nasser Al-Attiyah won stage 2 in the other Hummer.

Long way to go but good start for both.

Good info here, but you have to sign up to watch the videos. http://www.planetrobby.com/

Yep. Africa is too dangerous, even for rally.

Look who just caught up. It's been in South America since 2009. It was cancelled at the last minute in 2008, due to terrorist threats on the rally (IIRC the threats arose in Mauritania).

I remember it being axed I never knew it came back. I use to love watching it on TV but haven't seen it in the last few years.

It got pretty bad, the Mauritania situation is what killed the original version. But there was an earlier Dakar where Russian military transport planes flew the competitors over Algeria due to the threat of terrorist attacks. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/giant-airlift-for-sahara-rally-after-terror-threat-727147.html

In 2001, a driver lost a foot when he strayed off course and hit a land mine. http://abcnews.go.com/International/story?id=81746&page=1 And people think NA$CAR is tough.

I think at one point they were trying to return it to Africa but the political upheavals which culminated in the Arab Spring pretty much shut that down. Some reports said that some of the former Eastern Bloc countries were trying to get it run there as well.

Anyway, it's now called 'Dakar' meaning they can run it just about anywhere.

I would like to see it run as the Paris-Shanghai. YES!
